Time only passes when someone is logged into the server.

EDIT: Also note that day count on a server may not have much meaning. It's not going to affect your difficulty in regards to zombies. However if a server is not properly maintained, high day count servers may have issues with resources. If a server has a player count exceeding 20, and has a high day count, there is a pretty decent chance that the map is near end of life as a result of data corruption.

You’ll get differing opinions on this and can form your own. You’re always welcome to play the game how you like. But since you ask, for me there is a big difference between can’t reach and can’t easily reach.

If they can’t reach you at all, ever, then the game is broken. You’re taking advantage of AI bugs to make the game artificially easy: easier than intended. It’s not much more impressive than turning God mode on. But it’s also a “don’t hate the player, hate the game” situation. Those bugs need to be fixed.

If they can’t easily reach you, but they would eventually get there, then we know the zombies can carry out their essential purpose. Hopefully reaching that state took planning and effort, commensurate with the amount of protection you’re enjoying from it. Though there are many ways to mount a defense, you should reap what you sow.
