No, It's not just you. It's basically the difference between and .

I've done a few saves where I just did what I needed or wanted in the moment without any consideration for the long game. Did it put me in a couple bad spots? Sure. But, It was fun, and I was able to just relax without worrying obsessively over "how am I going to survive the horde night 100 days from now if I don't gather every single little tiny bit of brass!" and stuff like that.

The game, after all, does balance itself around your actions. The only 'wrong' thing to do is to grind exp for the sake of grinding exp (EG: Making a screamer spawning farm or building a great wall out of reinforced concrete that serves no purpose in your defenses.) -- So why not just chill and play at any pace you feel like on a given day?

You gotta understand, many of the 7DTD youtubers have been playing the game for like 1,000-5,000+ hours over the course of half a dozen or more alpha versions. They need to do things differently to keep things fun and to keep it from getting stale, Both for themselves and for their viewers.

I mean, Spears are practically brand new (About a year old). So, of all the weapon types, It's not surprising that it's seen a LOT of use since it was released. Clubs, sledges, knives, etc, are comparatively overdone since they've all been in for the majority of the games lifetime.

As for POI vs manually built base, It's typically a question of short term vs long term. Even I who prefers making my own base will typically hole up in a POI for the early game while I amass resources. I know Grand Spartan at least does something similar- Starts off with some kind of POI for awhile, then goes on to build a massive megabase.

It's rare for anyone, at least from what I've seen, to actually start the game and build their own base from the start rather than holing in a POI first.
