I think I get what you're saying... but can we agree that the 20% of screen real estate taken up by UI is, by its nature, always going to be the important stuff? This would be like in a car, instead of looking down to read the speedometer, you want to look at a flag on the hood ornament that flaps in the wind when you're going faster. Maybe it could supplement the dashboard, but it's not going to, by itself, be better than the dashboard.

There was a time when hunger, thirst, and XP weren't even shown on the HUD. But now that they are, I'm mostly thinking what's there is adequate in terms of visibility.
