[2018] I had heard you can play this game solo if you want? However I am worried there will be "raid" type missions and such that will require teams and take a long time to complete if you're solo. I don't have the most reliable friends in terms of availability. Could anybody link me to any info on this?

There is matchmaking so you can make more friends!
