You've seen it a million times before. Platformers, first-person shooters, JRPGs, action RPGs... most of the time, a arachnid or a bug walks and talks exactly like any other monster in the game. For all the difference it made, it might as well have been a wolf, a robot, a wolf-robot - you name it.

When I played Skyrim way back when, it always amused me that we went through huge spider nests, and every time the spiders would just descend vertically down and fight you on the ground in exactly the same way a bear or a bandit would.

I really appreciate that in a game about space bugs, the bugs actually utilize their main advantage: they can walk anywhere! This creates such a different experience in combat. When a wave starts, you know that standing next to a wall is an open invitation to the glyphids to bite your scalp.

I swear that focusing my attention on only one group of bugs killed me more times than running out of ammo or getting pinned down on unfavorable terrain. And honestly? That's beautiful.

Don't know if that carried over to Source 1 or possibly Source 2, it might have.

I recall HL was a heavily modified Quake engine with some Quake 2 stuff, and that also carried over to the Source engine to some extent.
