💡 We’ve seen your world conquests, but now we want to know more about those *less* successful Ottomans runs, particularly in the early days.
What happened? What did you learn?
...and how many times did your game crash when choosing an heir? 😉
The game’s default starting scenario is called ‘Rise of the Ottomans’ for good reason; indeed, their victory at the Battle of Varna led European nations to reconsider their estimation of the Ottomans’ power.
The Ottomans are often considered somewhat of a “final boss” for players facing off against them, so it follows that taking the reins of the mighty Sultanate yourself confers an advantage that’s ideal for beginners - but pacing your conquests is still important.
Here come the big guys 💪 Though we previously discussed the merits of an early Portugal campaign, the Ottomans are often the more conventional choice for an ideal beginner nation -- and with very good reason.

Was Portugal one of your first EU4 nations? 🧭
Portugal gameplay reflects its historical dominance in naval exploration, which is why you start with a free Explorer.
(if you're wondering why Portugal and England start the game as allies, this goes back to the Anglo-Portuguese Treaty of 1373, which persists even to this day)
Portugal starts off in a very comfortable position. No immediate neighbours looking to pick a fight with you (unless you make Castile particularly angry). Just the vast, glorious sea, with prosperous new lands to be discovered.
"Help! I'm new to EU4! Who do I play??" you ask.
From deep within the internet, one commanding voice rings out: "🟦 P O R T U G A L 🟦"
Portugal offers lots of gameplay variety and is indeed a good choice for new players, so let's take a closer look at this naval superpower! 💪

@Tarmaarn We can't 100% guarantee that it doesn't as any patch runs inherent risks of compatibility issues with saves from earlier versions, so if you're worried about your save we would recommend rolling back to the previous build if possible!
