381s yeah there's lots of really difficult
382s things about it um i i think that's true

389s there's always things that crop up that

393s you know pesky bugs and edge cases that
396s that you wouldn't expect to be an issue

402s you have to work out how to fix them
404s always tough stuff how much is the game

425s devs don't only play their games as a
427s refreshing yeah i mean we we've been
429s doing this for quite a while now we've

472s i learned i went to university to learn

482s because really that's the most fun type

641s and it really depends on the day
644s uh and what the task is to decide what
646s it is so like um
648s today i just started working on
650s uh the integrating
652s or actually splitting the character list
655s for online and offline characters that
656s you could switch between them quickly
658s and easily in in our
659s character select screen to start

664s and so the the like first stage of that
666s is
667s mostly
668s in edit or using tools because they're
671s tools we've created
673s in the code previously so i can i can
675s take things we've used for
677s other tab systems and
679s um so it's a lot of like just drag and
681s drop plug and play stuff that because
684s uh because i built it specifically to
686s work with our
687s um
689s with our game and so i so in situations
691s that i knew and and cases use cases that
694s i knew we would need
697s um but then i'm gonna have to link that
699s into the
701s uh what like the list gets populated um
704s i would say it'll probably be about
706s probably 50 50 in the end of like using
709s editor stuff and code stuff for this
710s particular task

714s but in general i think i spend it's
716s probably closer to like 70 30

725s but it really really depends on the task
731s some things are almost exclusively in
732s the editor
740s how did i get it oh um
745s uh hello mike are there plans for the
747s near future to get more skill reworks i
748s try to make it or decay work for example
750s and it feels so dated yeah i mean

753s you can ask that question
755s until we're at the point of the game's
756s development cycle where we're like
757s looking to sunset the game in hopefully
760s over a decade from now

764s the answer to that question will be yes

767s that's just the sort of thing that we
768s like to do frequently
771s updating old skills is a really
772s important part of keeping the game fresh
775s and fun
776s um it also is

779s uh time intensive less less person hours
782s less work hours associated with it than
785s creating something from scratch
786s generally speaking

791s and you can end up with actually better
792s wins for it because if it's if it's like
795s you're reworking an old skill
797s you can make it essentially be a new
799s skill uh
801s as far as people are concerned because
803s it's it's like you open up all sorts of
805s new
806s world of possibilities you know

811s getting rid of something that is old and
813s crappy is almost more valuable than
815s adding something new
817s without you know reducing the total
819s number of things
821s so yes we really like doing reworks for
823s for older skills i think orb decay is
826s on the whole of what's out there

831s there's a lot of skills i'm gonna do

844s don't like to fall over i find it

1011s because there's so little that i don't

1014s so many courses that honestly i feel
1016s like i could have done without
1018s like half of the courses in a computer
1020s science program are math classes
1023s and like another quarter of them are
1024s math classes in disguise

1118s so i mean uh

1122s someone score or someone um sabertooth

1133s i got a whole list i should just go with
1135s the list
1150s one second i will tell you
1153s which ones i would like to rework first
1166s there's a lot of autocast uh changes
1168s that i'd like to see
1170s and those aren't really big reworks but
1172s um all the major autocad skills like uh
1175s ring of shields and
1176s uh sigils of hope um
1179s holy aura a lot of paladin skills

1186s i'd like to dig into some bone golem
1188s summon a bear and someone saber tooth
1191s i think all three of those could use
1192s some changes in their trees along with
1193s the visuals which all the visuals are
1195s working on those you guys seen them all
1197s uh storm totem
1199s uh volatile reversal i think could use
1201s there's i i think volatile reversal
1203s could use some some really
1205s uh
1206s not dramatic changes but some like core
1209s functionality changes that i think would
1210s be really healthy for the skill overall
1211s make it a lot more interesting to play a
1213s lot more um
1215s a lot more welcoming to play
1217s right now it's kind of brutal even if
1218s you're like really good at it you still
1220s make mistakes
1221s yeah she thinks it's easy but she
1223s doesn't have to do it

1227s tempest strike i'd like to to dig into a
1229s little bit more before that as well um
1235s i didn't actually find the list i was
1236s just looking at a list of skills that we
1238s had and i was pulling stuff off my head
1249s and why before orb decay um and why
1251s before decay just
1253s they're worse
1255s that's i don't know why i'm going down
1256s there they've they are
1260s in greater need of it i don't know how
1262s to quantify that
1269s uh like
1271s oh
1272s with with things like um
1274s bear someone bear i can quantify that
1276s because trees shouldn't have nodes on
1278s like we have a few a few pretty strict
1280s rules on certain certain things for
1282s trees so skill trees shouldn't have a
1284s node that has more than five points
1286s allocable to it uh i know bear and
1288s sabertooth both have nodes that can go
1290s over five
1291s um
1292s it's like right there that puts them in
1293s the front of the pack immediately
1296s um and then on top of that they just
1298s also have very few total points
1299s allocable to them um and very few total
1302s nodes so just like from a numbers
1305s perspective they're
1307s underdeveloped
1308s um and then from looking at what those
1311s nodes do
1312s a lot of them are kind of muddled
1315s at best that's the nicest way i can put
1317s it um
1320s like
1322s literal thorns appearing on the skin of
1324s the bear and having it become a caster
1327s is is kind of interesting mechanically
1329s but it just looks weird
1331s um
1333s so getting something that fits
1334s thematically in order to bring that's a
1336s similar fantasy i think would be a lot
1338s more appropriate
1344s sabretooth has too much of its tree
1346s devoted to as a percentage too much was
1348s treated devoted to
1349s cold
1350s um cold stuff so if you don't want to go
1352s cold or do want to go cold it basically
1355s dictates
1356s like everything you're doing in that
1358s tree it becomes sort of a
1361s a one decision tree
1364s a one depth binary tree
1371s speaking of puddles is volatile reversal
1374s eating me into void puddles at the side
1376s of the room a feature or a bug i mean
1381s it's pretty it like

1669s so it's it's a big balance thing and it
1672s shifts all the time and as soon as you
1674s add even if you have a system where the
1676s things that are rng the things that are
1679s deterministic are in a good balance and
1681s you add something else over here that
1682s seems unrelated
1684s it affects it and it's a very big
1686s ecosystem that is
1687s um that that is affected by things that
1690s don't seem like they're connected
1692s um
1692s i think sometimes it's
1695s difficult to see reasons why we don't do
1698s things it's like well like oh you should
1700s like obviously we should have this thing
1701s and and i it's difficult to see the
1704s whole system as a whole and i frequently
1706s forget about things when trying to look
1708s at the system as a whole to to do things
1710s like this like that's
1711s that's that's an easy thing to
1715s to like have problems with and i think
1717s one one thing that i
1719s uh like to look at is
1721s um by giving something a tangible like
1724s set amount of time that something takes
1725s and you're guaranteed to get it or
1726s something you're working towards and
1728s it's just going to happen

1731s can be a really positive thing to have
1733s but
1734s one of the big downsides to it maybe not
1736s downside one of the things that it just
1737s does and can be a downside in context of
1739s other things is that it
1741s um it assigns a value of time
1745s to a specific item
1748s and it says uh like
1750s it makes it pretty clear what that time
1752s is
1753s um
1756s and it sometimes gives that expectation
1758s that that's what that time is and
1760s sometimes um
1762s say there's two ways to get something
1765s and one way it's pretty clear
1767s that you're going to get it in let's
1770s let's say 100 hours like that it's you
1773s put it 100 hours you're gonna get it um
1775s and then let's say there's an rng way to
1777s get that same thing
1779s um and on average if you if you focus on
1782s the rng way it's going to take you let's
1784s say
1785s 75 hours and
1788s these these numbers might seem like
1790s weird but i'm trying to use roundish
1792s numbers to make this easier to explain
1793s because i'll get lost in my numbers if i
1795s don't um so let's let's say
1797s um it'll take 75 hours to get this thing
1801s on average through an rng system
1803s and that's kind of calculated and known
1806s by the community everyone sort of has
1807s figured roughly that out
1809s um
1811s because there's this benchmark of well i
1814s know i can get it
1816s at 100 hours
1818s um
1820s or i can
1821s or or a 75-hour system and it it
1825s i'm explaining i realized halfway
1827s through this explanation that is a
1828s terrible way to explain this basically
1830s people are bad at
1831s making estimations for time investments
1833s on things when it's an rng system
1836s and comparing that to a less rng based
1839s system is people are bad at that as well
1841s and i like i don't mean anyone specific
1844s i am terrible at it myself it's just
1846s humans are bad at
1847s uh recognizing random systems and uh
1851s and and estimating for themselves how
1853s long things should take
1855s i need to turn a fan on
1869s it is cooking in here okay
1871s um
1878s we've really intentionally designed the
1879s legendary potential system legend system
1881s in general
1883s to act as sort of a bonus end game
1886s system so it's a tale
1889s on a complete item system so you
1892s like
1892s most content most like
1894s uh most content is designed so that with
1896s a
1897s uh a well-designed build
1900s um
1901s and
1902s a
1903s like something that's in the higher
1905s power levels of builds out there
1907s you should be able to complete
1910s all the major content and i want to put
1912s a little asterisk there that's saying
1913s that like
1914s 10 000 corruption
1916s uh mottos is not
1919s normal content so to speak
1922s um so we could i guess we use t4 jewelry
1924s as an example you should be able to
1925s complete two for jewelry with
1929s um without legendary items for the most
1931s part unlike if you've got a solid build
1933s and no legendary items you should
1935s probably be able to do it
1937s um
1939s and i i know there are builds out there
1941s that can't do it and i i hate using a
1944s specific boss fight as a benchmark for
1946s that because it creates the is this
1948s viable discussion to pop up but
1950s pretending that doesn't exist for a
1951s moment
1953s um
1954s i i think the one of the main reasons we
1956s don't have a deterministic way to
1959s put legendary potential on an item
1962s is is that we want it to be sort of this
1964s extra tail to the system not a
1967s um
1969s perceived mandatory part of the system
1971s and
1974s on top of that
1975s if there is a way to add legendary
1978s potential to an item um it throws off
1981s the balance of the way legendary
1983s legendary potential brings up lower
1985s level uniques that's one of the main
1986s things that the system does is it brings
1988s up lower level unique so if we have a
1990s way to to slap legendary potential on
1992s something like ravenous void um that's a
1995s completely different thing than the
1997s ability to slap legend potential on a
2000s hammer of lauren or hamlet lorenz or
2002s everyone pronounce it but so
2004s we then have to put
2007s um
2009s a a long a variable time on getting this
2012s legendary potential investment
2014s onto these items relative to what the
2017s item that you're putting it on is
2021s um
2022s and the system becomes very complex we
2024s we have
2025s um
2026s designed something out like this when we
2028s were looking at the legendary potential
2029s system in the first place we did design
2031s something that would do basically this
2034s um and we decided that it was
2036s a not positive overall and be too
2038s complicated
2042s very long-winded rambling answer and i
2044s know i kind of backtracked on the stuff
2046s i said there i'm sorry about that
2047s hopefully that gives you a little
2048s insight into it
2051s uh
2052s mayor shards has several 67 point nodes
2054s always more interesting to hear why
2056s though thanks yup uh
2060s i
2061s we didn't have our
2063s systems in place at that point it's a
2065s really old tree
2067s that's why
2070s we were still experimenting we were
2071s still learning we still are
2074s um
2075s but we we
2077s uh opposed making that tree um four ways
2080s after making entry actually we built a
2082s bunch of tools to like um give us
2084s statistics and check for uh numbers on
2086s trees so it checks
2087s the total number of nodes the total
2089s number of points investible in the
2091s entirety of the tree
2092s um and gives an average number of points
2094s per node because those two numbers give
2096s that their number um
2098s it gives a total number of connections
2101s like um
2103s like total number of just connections so
2105s one two three four five six seven eight
2108s and a total number of connection point
2110s requirements and then gives the average
2112s for that as well because that the first
2113s two numbers give you the third number
2116s um and we try and get each one of those
2118s values into and the total number of
2120s nodes i think i said that we try and get
2122s all of those values into a roughly
2125s similar-ish range um and i said roughly
2128s similar issue because some trees um need
2131s a few longer threads that have less that
2133s ends up with less connections some trees
2135s need to have a lot of connections some
2136s trees need to have um a little more
2138s nodes like you'll notice that um summon
2141s skeleton i think has one of the highest
2142s nodes in the
2146s probably in the 35 node range

2772s the answer we got was hilarious it was
2773s like it was when would you do
2775s this operation in python or how would
2777s you do this operation in python and his
2778s answer was like you would never do that
2780s in python that's stupid
2783s and we quoted him in the exam it was

2791s it's cool he replied in like just a
2793s couple hours

2799s outside of gear uniques
2801s has there been discussion on
2803s how or if skill trees will evolve to
2805s help keep build diversity going there
2808s seems to be some skills that the skill
2809s point investment on them are largely
2811s static for large parts of builds these
2813s most often are utility defensive skills
2815s but there are some offensive skills as
2817s well yeah um i think that's just
2820s the skill could be designed better
2823s um
2825s so yeah there's
2827s um sometimes those knock-on effects from
2829s like one skill getting a change that
2831s adds to another
2833s i'm sure there'll be other systems in
2835s the future that integrate into skills
2836s that aren't there now

2842s sometimes there's things that seem
2843s unrelated that will affect how skills
2845s are
2846s are used so maybe we add in
2849s um
2850s maybe there's a skill let's say um
2852s lightning blast and the only way to play
2854s lightning blast was to compare it to
2855s cold
2856s it's just it's just the best way to play
2857s lightning blast but then suddenly we
2858s release content where just lightning
2861s damage is unbelievably useful and
2864s suddenly the discussion of whether to
2866s use lightning blast in cold form or
2867s lightning form becomes a debate just
2870s from changing the content that's
2871s available and not even changing the
2873s skill itself
2874s um
2877s uh then there's there's other effects
2879s where it's like you can get a unique
2882s let's say a unique four
2884s of volcanic or extending our lightning
2885s blast example here let's say there was a
2889s unique four volcanic orb that said like
2891s every time you
2892s use a differently elemented skill
2896s it gets
2897s 400 more coal damage um and so suddenly
2900s you don't want to use your lightning
2901s blast as cold because you need to have
2903s it be lightning instead to trigger that
2906s um
2908s so you can
2909s you can see how there's things that
2910s aren't even in the skill tree or even
2912s directly interacting with skill trees in
2914s a new way that can affect it and and
2917s i i guess my point is that
2919s those skills are still going to get work
2921s aren't going to get changes and
2923s um
2924s largely it's difficult to
2927s tell that that's going to happen with a
2928s skill tree until
2930s you all get it in your hands and
2933s sometimes discover things that we didn't
2935s expect or

2941s there's all sorts of reasons that that
2942s um like a skill skill a specific skills
2945s meta can get stale i guess
2949s and yeah that's not ideal and we do like
2950s to mix it up and

3040s lot of things that happen there too

3042s know what's droppable where and they use
3044s loot tables very differently than we do
3053s like how there's three items in the game
3055s that are only droppable by two things in
3056s the entire game you know stuff like that
3061s uh is there a system to skip the
3063s campaign for all characters in last
3064s epoch yes and if not why not as we
3067s especially see poe
3069s it's a highly regressive feature and so
3071s there's not a system to just skip the
3072s whole thing at the moment
3074s and i can go into why there's not a
3075s system to skip the whole thing um
3081s and and why we've implemented it the way
3082s we have i'll try and do a little bit
3084s briefly because i think we've talked
3085s this a few times on stream um
3088s basic the the short answer is the
3091s campaign is a tutorial for your
3092s character
3093s um
3095s and having something there before you
3098s get into into more difficult content
3101s is um
3102s is is important for us to to have
3105s the total experience with per character
3107s being
3108s engaging and fun and and having it
3111s having building a connection there too
3113s so it's not just about
3114s um learning the character but also
3117s you know having a
3119s like this is my
3120s instead of just being uh
3122s i made a
3125s you know like this is my
3126s uh puncture bow puncture hail
3129s averro's bow rogue not i made a puncture
3132s hail bow rug
3136s um and having that distinction in in in
3139s language that you're
3140s feeling as as playing the character i
3142s think is important

3145s what we do is we have
3147s um campaign skips so we have specific
3149s points in the campaign where you can
3151s skip content
3154s um
3156s and and the goal is to have a lot more
3158s of these than is possible to be done on
3160s a single character um and also to not
3162s have these be doable on the first
3164s character of any season or league so um
3168s part of that is we don't want brand new
3170s we don't want to give brand new
3171s characters the opportunity to get to end
3173s game and be completely lost so the
3176s campaign does act as as a learning curve
3178s for them for those players that are um
3181s going through and if you just dump them
3183s into end game with with a
3185s like you give them a starting set of end
3186s game gear and you're just like
3188s um or or you just slap them in the arena
3190s for 60 levels and they have to they just
3192s power level it quick or something like
3194s that
3194s you know it's it's
3199s i think that person i think that would
3200s be a very boring
3203s um
3205s to to just do the do the arena for 60
3207s levels or something
3209s not for every character and then if you
3211s just give someone a character that is
3213s level 16 don't make them do anything for
3215s it

3220s this is a huge topic i don't want to go
3221s too deep i'm trying to like reign in
3222s what i'm saying to to not ramble a whole
3225s bunch here but uh that experience is
3228s important that that journey is important

3243s we do try and curate something that we

3310s um and there's there's two other skips
3311s as well
3322s um yeah so we and sometimes we change
3324s the campaign and sometimes we change the
3326s um what happens as you level so we've
3329s set it up in the way such way that at
3331s the start of a league um at the start of
3333s a season or whatever sort of a cycle the
3334s first character plays the campaign and
3337s then after that subsequent characters
3338s can
3339s as you have gear in your stash that you
3341s are
3342s able to make them be better and and you
3344s have keys you can you can transfer to
3346s them uh you can jump in and skip
3348s sections of the campaign and level up a
3351s little bit faster
3358s and it's it's it's designed the whole
3360s the system as a whole is designed as
3361s such that once we have enough of these
3363s you'll be you'll be starting a new
3365s character and say like okay my character
3367s is really good at dungeons one five
3369s seven and nine
3370s and so i'll do those ones but i'm gonna
3372s skip dungeons two three or whatever it
3375s was because they they overlap so it has
3378s the timeline i usually draw
3380s and so we've got the line uh and here's
3382s dungeon one two three four five six um
3385s but this dungeon takes you to this point
3387s oh my goodness this is laggy
3389s um and this dungeon takes you to this
3391s point
3392s wow this is crazy
3393s um and so if you take this dungeon you
3395s can't access the start of this dungeon
3397s here
3398s um and maybe this one says like super
3400s far and takes you to here and if you
3401s take this one it like precludes you from
3402s getting into either one of these but
3403s both of these will just take you right
3404s to the end
3405s or something like that you know
3407s um and there's also quests along the way
3409s that you need to get to unlock uh the
3411s full potential of your character so
3412s skill points and passive points are
3415s passive points and idle unlock slots and
3418s so you end up with
3419s um
3420s i think what will be really cool is
3422s there'll be some passing problems that
3423s will happen and it's kind of similar to
3426s uh things that happen in speed running
3428s communities where people uh route a game
3430s for like making it optimal and i think
3433s they'll be like
3434s if eventually what i hope will happen i
3437s expect will happen is people will come
3438s up with like
3439s uh okay you're leveling a paladin um
3442s this is the best route to take oh you're
3444s leveling
3445s a rogue in general this is the best
3447s route to take because there's this one
3448s dungeon that um
3452s you know it's really easy if you can
3453s crit consistently and rug's really good
3455s at critting so you know take a rogue in
3456s there and it makes it really easy
3459s um but if but at all but it has like
3462s super high resistance to dots and maybe
3464s so if you're playing a
3465s a dot necromancer or something or like
3468s it's really good at killing minions so
3469s if you have like a bunch of if you're
3470s necromancer with a bunch of minions it's
3472s it's gonna be a bad time so you don't
3473s take that one on a necromancer and you
3475s go this other one instead that's really
3477s useful to have a bunch of minions you
3478s know
3482s so i think that'll help keep the
3483s campaign
3484s a little bit fresh
3487s and a little bit dynamic
3489s while still being
3491s a good tool for
3493s creating a new character
3499s we're still we are still playing we're
3500s making we're playing an rpg like we want
3502s this to be
3504s a character that you're
3505s um you're having some attachment to this
3507s is this is a character that you're
3509s um you're leveling up and it's growing
3512s with you as as you play and these things
3514s and and all these are things that we
3516s work we keep in mind as we're creating
3518s these systems

3537s see all of the stacks instead of 15 plus

3927s getting an extra character to max level
3929s means you're able to do more in-game
3931s content per week
3933s um so i think that having
3935s though and and with how much longer it
3936s takes to get to endgame
3938s and with the raid lockout system i think
3940s that it's much more appropriate to have
3942s boosts in that game

3945s than it is in an arpg like this having
3947s said that no i'm not a huge fan of it
3953s uh the story skipping key thing sounds
3956s neat any potential
3957s some npcs have slightly differing
3959s dialogue based on what was skipped uh
3963s that's something we could do i think

3966s um there's nothing in there right now

3969s uh story lines and dialogues uh secrets
3972s that are hidden in the dungeon so you
3974s get different experiences that way

3983s multiplayer for waypoints quests unlocks

3992s entire party boosts the thing oh uh

5029s once in a while you get a friend for

6331s solution at all but it deters it a
6333s little bit
6335s um so that was part of the reason that
6337s we put a sticker price in the game in

7216s and now that you're looting it it will
7218s explode in your face gotcha plus they

7272s we have pools of mods that uh conflict
7276s with each other so um
7279s uh there's like up like the the really
7281s simple version of this is you look at an
7282s item and there's like a prefix and a
7284s suffix
7286s um like items directly do this actually
7288s it's the same thing items and monster
7289s mods are identical really when it comes
7290s to this there's so there's a prefix
7292s there's prefixes and suffixes only
7293s prefix go in the prefix pool and stuff
7294s because it's going to suffix pool
7295s there's a limited number of prefixes and
7297s suffixes that can that can exist
7298s simultaneously and some prefixes and
7300s some suffixes aren't mutually exclusive
7302s such that um you can't put a rogue only
7305s uh prefix on the same item that has a
7308s sentinel only prefix on it because they
7311s have to go on rogue or sentinel-only
7313s bases
7315s um but then even more than that there
7316s are some that only will go into helmets
7318s and some that will only go on two relics
7320s and they're once again mutually
7321s exclusive that way so there's different
7323s things that limit how what items they
7324s can go on simultaneously um and monster
7327s mods do basically the same thing where
7329s there's certain mods that can appear as
7330s prefixes certain mods that can appear as
7332s suffixes and certain mods that are
7333s mutually exclusive with each other um
7335s and and that's unfortunately it's
7337s something that needs to be curated on an
7338s individual level when you get a lot of
7340s them like p we probably has um
7343s some can squeak through that cause
7344s problems it's a similar that happened to
7346s d3 actually
7348s um
7351s earlier early on when you when you would
7352s get um
7354s really deep and there'd be like
7356s chaining walling arcane enchanted
7360s enemies and you're just like there's
7362s nowhere i can run

7365s um like fire chains walling and you're
