172s maybe yesterday the last couple of days
175s we turned on our multiplayer servers for
177s our community tester program again and
179s we don't plan on turning them off

185s as long as we possibly can keep them on

210s trade the way it's going to be at all at

216s that we need to be able to test it and

226s um and so we've we've just had our very
229s first successful item transfers
231s um so we're really early testing of item
234s transfer systems um and so yeah we're
237s still we're still working out of the
238s kinks on those systems and uh we'll need
240s to get some some
242s testing in before we finish the design

245s start actually talking about what it is

253s but will there'll be a wipe before

263s everyone who's in the ct program the ct
265s program is like a um

269s it's a different it's not public yet but

287s however once we do hit point nine and we
289s have an official launch for multiplayer
292s all of the characters that are created
293s in that the plan right now i see the

296s can change maybe there's a problem or a
297s bug or something but the plan is to keep
299s all those characters in a
301s standard league or standard cycle type
304s environment where they're still playable

307s but they're just not on the ladder
308s basically so you won't lose your stuff
311s um but if you want to compete in the
312s latter and take part in the new uh all
315s the the new stuff there
317s whatever that means which still is also
319s not fully detailed yet

323s be playable but not playable in the new

326s cycle as we're calling it

337s i mean it's it's a really sturdy sextant

354s you don't need a shield to block
357s um so it's
359s shields are the most
361s generally useful
362s tools for blocking
364s uh and you can and that's where the
367s majority of block will come from but you
368s can block with any device
370s uh any any weapon anything uh as long as
373s you have a source of block
375s be it through a passive skill
377s or like an item ethics there's also ways
379s to get blocked
382s lots of two-handed weapons that block on
383s them as well

420s can unplug your internet it'll just work

423s you see that character select screen you
425s just unplug your internet and everything

748s have the the rpg that he wanted to play

789s hey i'm making this game this is how i
791s found out about this it's like just a
792s couple months in
794s about three or four months in um
798s it was on the diablo 2 subreddit
801s uh it was about a hypothetical skill
803s system that i was like that sounds cool
805s let's talk about this i was unemployed
806s at the time fresh out of university

812s yeah i just started working on it
814s evenings weekends

817s and then as far as game dev before this
819s experience for myself personally

822s i have
824s technically i've got two apps on the
826s play store released um

832s neither are overly popular which is fine
835s because they were built specifically as

839s just i'm gonna learn how to make games
840s and see what happens so just having fun
843s with them
845s and uh
847s a little bit of game design outside of
849s video game space so like um
852s magic card design so uh
856s similar but different
860s i created and printed a
862s draft set for that
865s like eight years ago now
868s which was a ton of fun
870s i actually have a box of it right behind

876s it was never
878s sold or anything this was just for

884s exploration stuff
886s so here's like a booster box of a set
889s that i made that will
890s draft and there's like little
895s all those elastic bands probably sound
897s fantastic there's like three packs
900s that are like each elastic together

909s so it's draft ready it's been sitting
910s like that for like two years we had to

913s that we had planned i just never never

921s so many other people on the team that
922s have very different game design and
924s development experience

929s basically every every story you could

934s different person with one similar to it

940s arena champions bosses coming to fill
942s the rest of the classes of their build
944s seems a great way to put in some class
946s specific chase uniques oh absolutely

950s that's it's a really interesting design
952s space so there's
954s i think there's a lot of room for doing
955s some cool stuff that we've kind of
957s talked about
959s as like general ideas of like oh
961s wouldn't it be cool if
962s uh type things one idea that i i always
965s like and i don't know how we do it um is
968s putting in like last cycles
972s uh arena winners in different categories
975s into the arena champion pool for the
978s next cycle or something like that or
979s like characters based off of the
981s character they used so maybe not like
983s expect exactly the same with the same
984s gear or anything like that but like oh
986s uh like a hammerton was uh top of the
989s ladder so we'll put a hammerton in the
991s champion pool for next time type thing
993s and i think there's lots of cool ways to
995s involve the community that way the other
997s thing we've talked about doing is just
998s having it be um characters that staff

1042s it's pretty good any chance for the last
1044s epoch to be running on steam deck
1046s anytime soon sorry if the question's
1047s already been asked well um
1049s so steam deck is uh it's a very new
1052s platform
1053s um i think there's only three of us that
1055s have one at this point um
1058s so we don't have a lot of ways to
1060s develop and test for it at the moment
1062s um
1063s it is something we'd like to get
1065s involved with but we don't have any
1067s plans for specifics on if or when we do
1069s that uh
1071s it's not a huge stretch to get it
1072s working well because we are taking a lot
1074s of general optimization
1076s steps right now that will help a lot
1077s with it we are working to finish our
1079s controller support which will help with
1080s a lot with it and we do already have
1081s native linux support so those are like
1083s the big things that are needed to be
1084s done anyways to make it work nicely um
1087s so probably won't be a stretch to
1089s include it in the future but for now it
1091s is sort of a
1093s an extra game mode that we don't want to
1095s uh support just yet um
1099s so it's it's probably a post 1.0 target
1102s i know there's some people that have
1103s said they've got it working really well
1104s on there already some people said
1106s they've got it working ish and there's
1108s problems and you know there's varying
1110s results there but uh i'm sure you can
1112s find some people on reddit forums
1114s discord that have had
1116s some success with it if you want help
1117s getting it working but it is still a
1120s unsupported platform that we'd like to
1123s have at some point but don't know when
1125s that will be

1201s ton of fun it was great um
1204s we didn't really talk about our games
1206s much and for the most part it was just
1209s like chatting about games like you do

1212s friend you haven't seen in a few years
1213s and you like games and want to talk
1215s about them
1219s um so i can't say we have like game
1222s design powwows or anything like that

1225s but yeah there's there's um

1237s speaking of crate and grim dawn uh they
1239s just released or are just put into early
1242s access
1243s uh a new a new game in a new genre for
1245s this frontier

1247s play a little bit of had a ton of fun

1259s high uh full of myself that's the term
1262s uh i thought i was thought it was hot

1284s vfx front i love them all the games
1287s balance and extremely fun the visual
1288s effects just don't feel chunky enough

1295s bunch of little clips from previous dev
1297s streams um
1299s that uh if you just want to see those i

1309s basically all of them um so there's lots
1311s of good resources there if you want to
1312s see a bunch of examples of what's going

1316s that is something that i can say we are
1317s getting extremely positive feedback from

1322s is the updates the visuals the effects
1324s and sfx that have come through on that
1326s are
1327s being very very well received

1358s an example of a skill that was designed
1360s a while ago and could use some love uh
1364s will skills like this get that love
1365s before the three other masteries get
1367s released or is there plan to update
1369s where mastery's missing skills update
1370s skills get in implemented before 1.0 um
1374s yes and no to all of that there's sort
1376s of uh there's not a strict like this is
1378s the order things are happening in that i
1379s can give you um
1381s we we don't
1383s we
1383s work on all of it kind of together
1385s simultaneously

1387s i don't know when
1389s the masteries are coming apart from the
1391s fact that sometime between now and 1.0
1392s inclusive um
1395s so they're coming eventually
1398s as far as those other skills you'll see
1400s changes to skills happen to existing
1402s skills happen every patch
1405s whether that is ballista specifically on
1407s next patch um i can say we haven't done
1410s a bunch of work on it yet
1412s there's a lot of things i want to do to
1414s ballistic i've been playing i mean the
1415s the character i've been playing online
1417s for the last like three months now um
1421s i've been i've been trying to make
1422s ballista work
1424s in a like like leveling process early
1426s monoliths and all that sort of stuff

1430s it's just not
1431s it's just not there
1433s i really want it to be but i've been
1434s trying to get a lot of play time with it
1435s to really get familiar with how that
1437s that feel is in not in the super late
1440s game timing so it's um
1442s learning that process and and how that
1444s builds up is i think really important

1464s expensive skins that are large in scope
1467s for example skins for transformation
1468s skills with completely new theme model

1484s don't like saying no for sure just about

1516s yeah and you can see examples of that

1523s sort of uh this is what that was to
1524s indicate that that we are going to put
1525s skill effects in the
1527s as a cosmetic thing you can have
1532s stand down or die
1534s so then that can be something as simple
1536s as like making fireball blue

1544s um that i don't have good examples for
1546s right now because that's

1548s i don't think we have any of those
1549s created yet
1554s or not intentionally anyways i bet
1556s there'd probably be ways to like make
1558s skills look like some enemy skills in
1559s certain situations
1561s i can see that being a cool thing
1564s there might be reasons not to do that i
1566s don't know multiplayer reasons um
1570s we'll see

1583s how did you decide on the exact crafting
1585s material pickup range
1587s uh i can imagine it was hard to find the
1588s right balance between lazily pick up the
1590s whole screen and just get frustrated
1591s your you can't pick up uh drops of one
1593s mob pick up in one go uh because they
1596s died too far with each other
1599s from each other
1601s yeah it's um
1604s trial and error
1605s just uh pick pick a pick a size and
1609s see how it feels make it bigger make it
1610s smaller see how it feels
1617s i think the key thing is the minimum had
1619s to be
1620s items dropped from
1622s one pack of
1624s like densely packed mobs would be
1628s uh
1629s like all picked up simultaneously so if
1631s like a
1632s a medium-sized pack of densely
1634s grouped mobs or attacking you you kill
1636s all them at once
1638s any shards they all drop should all kind
1640s of vacuum up together i think that's
1641s sort of the like
1643s rough reasoning
1646s so to speak
1649s uh if you were starting last epoch
1650s development today would you go with
1652s unity engine yeah this is an interesting
1654s question and it's uh like if you knew
1656s what you knew now would you do it all
1657s over again um
1659s and it's it's really difficult it's a
1661s question i get asked every couple weeks
1663s and it's tough to answer because
1664s i think the answer is yes i would still
1666s go with unity
1668s and i know it's kind of surprising

1670s and it wasn't my decision to go with
1672s unity in the first place but i i think
1673s it was a smart decision to go with unity

1676s i don't know if we would have been
1679s able to get to where we are now without
1680s going with unity
1682s now if we're gonna start over today with
1684s like the established studio that we have
1687s and everything like that's a different
1688s story it changes the circumstances a lot
1690s but like if this is a knowing what you
1693s know now
1694s would you go through it again with unity
1695s again yes absolutely

1700s with an established studio maybe not i
1702s don't know that's a tough question to
1704s answer
1707s i don't think there's been anything

1710s severely problematic with unity that's
1713s that we've really never we i think we've
1714s gotten to a point where like

1718s the fact that we went with unity and if
1720s only we had made a better decision back
1721s then we our all our problems would be

1737s details on what trade would look like
1740s will look like for last epoch when it
1742s releases yet um the bizarre system is

1746s no longer planning to do at this point
1755s and it's one of those things i'd rather
1757s not talk about my personal preferences
1759s on the matter because it does get pretty
1760s muddy um

1767s sidestepping the trade question but i

1814s any oh the in-game i see any plans uh on
1816s normal monolith shortcut uh for over
1819s geared re-roll yeah so this is this is a
1821s very unique situation um

1828s don't spend a lot of time

1832s preparing for streams or playing the
1833s game
1834s outside of multiplayer testing and
1836s actual development and so the characters
1839s that i play on stream um i do use
1842s development tools to create them
1845s so it's not really a good
1847s uh example often in progression systems
1850s unfortunately

1854s but i do is it is sometimes feedback we
1856s get especially on more experienced
1858s players um
1859s getting powerful builds in their second
1861s third fourth character into early models
1863s and getting out of it quicker
1864s recently we did increase the speed of
1866s that quite a lot
1868s um
1870s so i think we're still sort of in that
1872s uh let's observe phase of um
1876s of modifying those things
1878s and

1881s i don't think there's any
1882s specific uh immediate plans for it right

1975s um like there wouldn't be a giant

2939s don't even have to leave play mode to do
2940s this we can just put that on there and
2942s it suddenly becomes heat seeking and
2945s you can change the variables on
2947s uh on there so you can say things like
2948s okay i want to only pick up targets that
2951s are within five units away um when it
2953s does pick up a unit it like it's hard on
2955s it no matter what
2956s um or it's like i wanted to pick up
2958s anything
2960s even remotely closed but i want to only
2961s just kind of vaguely move in that
2963s direction or something like that or or
2965s you can like invert it to be like i want
2966s to avoid
2968s target so like tries not to hit things
2970s that's always funny to look at too

2973s and and so there's there's there's lots
2975s of things you can do where you don't
2976s need code changes but like when you do
2977s any code changes i don't know

3053s um having a diverse
3057s ladder and competitive environment

3065s able to compete at

3068s at higher level content

3072s you're not defining your bill based on
3075s your content choices
3076s i'd say that's a general goal that's
3078s pretty good

3084s the situation

3094s overpowered um abilities that i think we
3096s handled fairly well

3133s balder's wrath which is a two-handed

3137s makes it so that every time you use a
3141s movement ability
3143s non-channeled movement ability i believe
3145s um
3146s it
3147s casts earthquake
3149s and wherebear has a fairly easily
3152s spammable short range non-channeled
3154s movement ability
3162s so you can

3164s trigger earthquake a lot with it and
3166s also in
3168s um that's interesting
3170s and ooh that's also interesting and when
3171s you're in um
3174s when you're in bear form your rage and i
3177s say that with air quotes but i'm not
3178s taking my hand off the keyboard right

3181s your rage is actually just a recolored
3183s mana
3184s like it literally is just mana ah that's
3187s a bad vr

3193s um so you can you can get a lot of
3197s um
3198s earthquakes off very easily um we've
3201s nerfed that build
3203s so many times

3206s so many times we've nerfed it people
3208s have called us out been like oh it's
3210s ruined you killed the build completely
3212s it's still one of the best builds it's
3214s it's not gonna die
3216s um and i think the general thing that i
3217s usually talk about with this is say you
3219s have um so you have a set of like four
3223s this on the screen will be even easier
3226s drawing on the screen

3236s each one of these lines is a build
3239s and then you have

3243s eq wherebear
3244s that's
3245s like that
3248s you know and then you have a whole bunch
3249s of the ones that are really small it

3257s looking at this situation this this
3259s build needs to be nerfed
3261s it's clearly better than everything else
3264s um i know this is a pretty contrived
3265s situation um but
3268s for example but like just follow with me
3269s on this one for a second i think it's
3271s important and the thing we've always
3272s tried to do is
3274s to not nerf it down to here
3278s um
3279s and it's it's generally actually
3280s different down to here so still clearly
3283s above the other things
3285s um
3287s or like i mean maybe give it a range
3290s give it like this range so like
3292s somewhere where it's at least as good as
3293s what else is out there
3295s um but not
3297s worse and it can be a little bit better
3298s so that's fine and i think hitting that
3300s range is what's impo is what's is
3302s important or alternatively if we think
3304s that all of these are too low
3307s nerfing it down to here and bringing all
3309s of these up to match as well
3313s and this is like
3315s one example of one situation and it's
3317s different for every other situation but
3318s this is how we try to approach balancing
3320s eq
3328s i like the red pen so i'll switch back
3329s before you close that
3333s and and it changes every single time
3335s there's a bouncing concern like that it
3336s changes um because sometimes you have to
3339s look at and it's it's how you target
3341s that as well so there's something else
3342s that could have drawn there's maybe you
3343s have like eq wherebear that uses
3345s balder's wrath but then you've also got
3347s like five other builds that all use
3349s balder's wrath as well so do you target
3351s baldur's wrath do you target earthquake
3353s do you target wherebear do you target
3355s the interaction between those three
3357s things like
3359s trying to
3360s hit the thing that's most unique to that
3362s build that doesn't hit other builds is
3365s important um
3366s sometimes change sometimes instead of
3368s just straight worse like someone said
3370s just being like something maybe has say
3372s plus 100 damage and it's too strong so
3374s plus 90 damage well maybe instead of
3376s doing just nerfing it down plus 90
3378s damage it's um you change it into a
3380s different stat that maybe um is still
3383s powerful but it doesn't have the same
3385s synergies with some other thing
3388s maybe it's introducing a new set to go
3389s with it to add new synergies to
3391s something else to um
3394s to incentivize just more variety in
3396s builds as well
3398s so there's a lot of different techniques
3400s for different situations and i think
3401s it's important to note that
3403s it's all in the case by case
3405s basis

3414s not get diegetic from jaw stripe phase
3416s if that's what that comment was but uh

4070s difficult it is to play um
4073s how and usually that comes from just us
4075s playing it you can tell pretty quickly

4581s reality the build was underpowered

4788s stand in and it would heal your minions

4792s we've looked at a few things for this
4794s and it's definitely not a closed issue

4798s part of the problem is

4802s having
4803s having a burden of optimal play that is
4808s kind of painful to do
4809s and for seemingly no reason
4813s is frustrating at best and when it when
4815s that burden of optimal play um
4819s that's

4821s silly
4822s involves going to different zones
4826s we really like to avoid it if possible
4829s so
4829s if going back to town just heal all your
4831s minions to full and
4833s pretty well not not necessarily on
4835s monolith because it's a little bit
4836s different but um in a lot of different
4838s places uh you could just
4841s boop back to town and oh i'll heal up
4843s all right go
4844s and it's it's uh
4848s having that go back to town go back to
4850s the world as like a heel button
4854s is uh
4856s potentially dangerous
4858s uh thing to have in the game
4862s so that's probably why it doesn't exist

4913s is quite often confusing to a lot of
4915s players
4916s um so we frequently get people say like
4918s oh i got 50 increased critical strike
4921s chance but i'm not critting every other
4923s hit

4925s it's broken it's a bug so we get that
4927s bug report
4928s surprisingly frequently um
4931s and
4932s what it's doing is it's a 50 increase to
4933s your base critical strike chance so
4935s if you have
4937s um
4938s five base crit and you have 50 increase
4940s you're out 7.5 percent chance which is
4941s way less than 50 crit chance
4944s and
4946s um that disconnect is a little tough to
4948s deal with sometimes so we're we've been
4950s exploring the possibility of removing
4952s increased and reduced and more and less
4956s uh critical strike chance from most
4958s things
4960s um and replace and and replacing them
4962s with a
4964s balanced version of
4966s flat added crit chance that's something
4968s we've been exploring
4970s um it's not set in stone it's not done
4972s it's not
4973s ready to go or anything like that so
4974s it's a possibility
4976s um
4978s but that's the style of thing we're
4979s looking at because there's
4981s having it be um
4983s having these systems because there's a
4985s lot of really complex systems that have
4986s to work together to make uh
4989s like that you have to use to make a
4990s character and
4992s um having those be
4995s simple enough that people can quickly
4997s and easily
4998s oh my phone just thought i was talking
5000s to it having those be simple and easy
5002s enough to understand for new players
5005s but uh deep enough that they can be
5009s explored by experienced players
5011s is um
5013s is a very fine line to walk and is is
5015s really important and i think it's like
5016s cornerstone of a of a good rpg's
5018s itemization system is it's that easy to
5020s learn hard to master
5022s uh
5023s one liner
5025s um and and having
5027s and we kind of have to look at how much
5030s depth does each bit of complexity have
5032s and people who watch the stream
5033s frequently will be sick and tired of me
5034s saying this um

5037s if there's a if there's a way we can
5038s remove complexity without removing depth
5041s that's probably a good thing

5044s and anytime we are adding complexity
5046s uh we need to ask ourselves is this also
5049s adding depth
5053s and there's
5054s exceptions to all of that
5058s and i say ask the question because it
5060s doesn't necessarily mean if the if the
5061s answer is no it doesn't say mean like oh
5063s it's not going to do it or something
5064s like that but maybe it means we need to
5066s look at why it doesn't and can we do
5067s anything to improve it to make it feel

5525s it's because that's like one of the big
5527s parts of the paladin class identity is
5529s the ability to have an aura

5534s and like we try and have that like big
5537s standout mechanic that really

5540s focuses hard on on specific classes and
5543s and sometimes there's there is
5545s like overlap elsewhere so like um
5548s primals and primeless and necromancer
5550s predominance and acolyte have a ton of
5551s overlap so there's lots of minion builds
5553s on both there's transformation builds on
5555s both there's melee builds on both
5556s there's spell casting builds on both
5558s like there's a lot of overlap there um
5560s but we always try and keep it pretty
5562s unique and
5564s um
5568s i i
5569s there's not a ton of room for
5573s uh unique and varied mechanical
5576s interactions for
5577s even theming
5579s uh for an aura style
5582s that's that's pretty beefy
5586s um
5587s for uh for for auras yeah
5590s like we already struggle a bit to come
5592s up with uh interesting mechanics for the
5593s skill tree for holy or just in general
5595s because it's usually just like a lot of
5596s stats

5600s there are there's been some cool ideas
5601s i've seen recently though that'll i
5602s think improve that
5604s and uh i could see i could see other
5606s classes coming down the pipe in the
5608s future like other masteries that aren't
5609s in the game yet that might be
5611s thematically suited to aura style

5616s at a similar level to paladin or at
5618s least more so than
5620s uh classes that are already in the game
5626s and we do get triggered aura abilities
5628s all over the place but but it's just
5630s having that like that primary active
5632s ability being an aura skill is pretty

6995s a unique item that lets you not need a
6997s target for it but the base version of it

7004s it's designed to go to a target you're
7006s going in not coming out and that's the
7009s that's the big thematic difference there

7137s then like some others that you respect
7139s more frequently as you're leveling and
7141s see how far they actually get away from
