Hello everyone!

Similar to the previous VFX updates we’ve made in the past (Syndra, Zilean, Malzahar, etc), we're working on updates to the Visual Effects (VFX) of champions whose spell effects are in need of some love. Our aim is to get their VFXs to current League standards and improve gameplay clarity.

This time, it's Varus's turn, for 11.24's PBE Patch!

Just like all the previous ones, and since these are smaller updates geared toward sprucing up some of the oldest members of the roster, they aren't in the same prioritization conversation as to how we decide who gets a VGU (where we take model, gameplay, and thematic into account too!): they do not affect any other timeline, and are simply dev passion projects.

Here's a video preview of the changes. As usual, the more recent the skins are, the less changes they are getting. His most recent skins only received very minimal tweaks (or not at all).

The main goal we had for this one VFX Update was to improve clarity, especially for his Q and R missile widths.

As a Varus main I'm overjoyed to see him getting some love! I know alot of people on the Varus mains subreddit really wanted some chromas for Blight Crystal so maybe we can see that happen?

Glad you like it! Sadly I am only able to change the VFXs, and have no say in chromas. :(

Yes, he's Darkin. I can have a quick look at that. I went off the colors from his model, and especially his bow.

I'd also love a simpler way to view these marks, but it might be too drastic of a change, and it would also require some refactoring.

I have a few very minor suggestions, most of which I see already covered, like Conqueror Varus's R being recolored to be more red/gold than red/purple. A big, big thing that would be a huge quality of life for Varus would be if when casting his ult, the tendrils that come out to root nearby enemies were slowed down a little bit to better match the actual time it takes to root nearby enemies. As of now, the tendrils get on top of people and kinda sit there for a minute before the root takes effect, and I'd love to see the root pop immediately when the tendrils snare them!

Another super small thing, for Heartseeker Varus, could you maybe add a more pinkish ring around the area his E is affecting? I see the roses and everything but it has a small greyish ring around it and if it fell more in line with the pink that say, his ult ring gives, it would look so good!

Feedback:

On Base, Blight Crystal and Arclight, the ultimate has an indicator on the ground that clarifies the hitbox, but on all subsequent skins it's missing. I think it helps a lot clarity-wise, so it'd be better if it stayed on all skins (with some minor coloring for each).

On Dark Star and Infernal, the circle that appears around the enemy after hitting the ult is just the old yellow-ish circle, while all other skins use the new, prettier one.

On Project, the hitbox ground indicator for the Q arrow is there, but I feel like it could be a bit brighter to be seen in gameplay.

Varus has been my main since day 1 & and you are definitely my favorite VFX artist in Riot, so I just wanted to say how happy and thankful I am for this (Hopefully he'll get an adequate VO soon, but I know that has nothing to do with you).

I do have a small feedback I'd like to mention.
From what I see in the video, Darkstar Varus' E now leaves arrows in the ground, which is a bit strange considering he doesn't actually fire arrows, but rather some kind of comets. Maybe craters or something would be better, or just... removing the arrows.
Also, in the Arctic Ops one, I always liked that his Q looked more like and actual, physical arrow rather than a pure energy one, since it seems to fit the skin better. Anyway, I understand if it's easier to just change that.

Sorry for nitpicking, and thanks again. A lot.

It could be just me though, I prefer when the marks are more simplified (Arclight, Cosmic, even something similar to Evelynn's Q mark!)

And for some R feedback:

- I'd add a fade-out effect to the "binding" VFX that appears around the champion once they're rooted. Currently it just disappears out of a sudden and it looks a bit out of place. (it concerns base, blight crystal and arclight, in other skins it fades out)

- Another thing I noticed is that the mark that appears below the champs (once they're targeted by the spread) is far smaller in base and blight crystal, while in others it remains big! In the same skins the mark also becomes bigger over time while in others it remains the same size. Personally I prefer the one from base but just wanted to point this out

In case of other skins I think I would only change the ground on Heartseeker's E! His other abilities are very bright and colorful while E remains quite gray and empty.

Other than that I just love everything about it! The effect that was added to Arclight's E is just so gorgeous!!! His base skin and swiftbolt are my favorite skins so using them after this update is gonna be exciting! Thank you sooo much again for this update <3

There is an effect! I tried to keep it at the same level as before the update, so it still won't be a huge explosion. But it should at least be noticeable. :)

Yes, I haven't touched Project much. The rain is still there. Likely got compressed by my recording and YouTube. :(
