This is a teaser for the summer event that includes the new 2v2v2v2 game mode, skin line and some other stuff. It's not associated with Project L (fighting game that's being developed by a separate team at Riot). More on the event coming Monday, then a lot of it will hit PBE on Tuesday :)

Depends on how much people play it. We really want to continue to develop it, run it regularly etc and think there's something really fun to it as a mode. But if people don't end up playing it we can't justify doing so. So crossing our fingers, but at this point what comes next will depend on player interest

Agreed, Odyssey Kayn's a great example. I think even as a Legendary he gets a lot more compelling if you've seen the associated Odyssey stuff that fleshes out the world he's part of a bit more

Also, who's voicing the announcer? I know it's an "announcer voice" but it sounds like a LCS or LEC caster that I can't quite put my finger on.

We're instead going for Street Kombat Soul Tag Guilty Versus Ultimate Edition Z.

Howdy!

Unfortunately, for the initial run of the Arena game mode we not able to integrate Champion Mastery, Eternals, or Challenges.

The mode works differently enough from Smmoner's RIft that we need to change our approach to these systems a bit if we want them to work well. If we want to grant points, the way we do that today is very similar to the way we grant tokens: Evaluating the skillfulness of the player for that specific game.

In terms of recognizing skill, the mode will have its own rating system.

In future runs and with future modes, we do plan to make sure our systems are well integrated. Hope this helps and down to answer more questions if you have them!

Hey /u/Reav3 quick random thoughts here:

There's obviously huge buzz around this new game mode, and its something the casual community has been asking for for a long time. I get that the competitive Summoners Rift experience isn't for everybody, but does the SR team ever think of the possibility of game modes cannibalizing SR's player base?

At the beginning of Season 13 and with the huge disappointment surrounding the start of year cinematic, the community was very vocal about the perception that League of Legends as a whole is seeing less priority within Riot. I wanted to bring up the same conversation but direct it specifically to Summoners Rift. My reasoning for this mostly revolves around a couple of things, first, the reallocation of resources to rebuild the Modes department from a team (Champions) who I deem pivotal to League and its evolution. Second, the scope and innovation of pre-seasons and frankly, the lack evolution/advancement is quite concerning. Knowing that for most of League of Legends lifespan, pre-seasons (and mid-seasons) were a HUGE shakeup to the game. This cadence respected the Evolution design pillar set for League, which in turn helped League achieve this longevity, but also maintain its identity.

So I can't speak for what people did in the past, but I can say that I am personally a fan of taking big risks. I was the Lead producer on the old mid season class updates we did in the past, as well as the producer of many loved/hated champions in league (like Yuumi) I was also one of the producers of the Preseason where we added Dragon.

In general I like pushing the envelope rather then playing it safe, so I wouldn't expect to see a tame preseason this year :)

It is my lane!

Previously, there were 3 mute buttons that sat above each row on the scoreboard. They were silly small and we were never particularly happy with how they worked. We took the opportunity when adding in-game reporting to consolidate the functions into a menu.

Understood that for experienced folks this means we've added an extra click when trying to mute someone. In order to mitigate that, we are introducing a shortcut in a future patch that let's you hold the mute button to quickly mute or unmute all for a player.

Hello, hope you're having a good weekend. I just finished watching August's stream and he was saying somthing that I found a bit concerning, not sure if you can shed some light on the situation or simply just have a conversation about it.

August seemed a bit sad and was even hinting that Briar could be his last project. I'm paraphrasing here, but he started saying how creativity and autonomy when it comes to champion ideation has been decreasing year after year. Champion ideas are mostly handed down from management. Champion designers don't get to "pitch" champion concepts anymore and just end up receiving such work from up top.

How do you feel about that?

Feels incorrect to me. It is true that every once in awhile we do a Champion that has a very defined opportunity space, and that is handed to a DNA team. To be clear that isnt handed to the DNA team from upper management, its handed to them by the Leadership team ON the champions team, of which August is a part of since he is a design lead. Ultimately the Product Owner approves the opportunity spaces before a team starts on them but they are usually generated by and created by other people, many of times from members of the Champions Team. The only time they are "handed down" is for stuff like Senna, but even then, that was a opportunity space I put together as Lead of the team, and also talked to the team about it and the team was SUPER excited to make her, so it wasn't like we "forced" it on the team.

Viego came about when August himself came to me after Sennas release and said we should do the Ruined King now, since tons of players were asking about him with Sennas release. I told August it sounded like a great idea, so why doesn't he make. Then he did. Even Yone was originally pitched to me by EndlessPillows, and then I agreed it was a dope idea so I made a opportunity space for it, and gave it to EndlessPillows to work on.

K'Sante and Naafiri both came from a "complexity framework" August made. He made that framework and said we should make a Low Complexity Assassin and a High Complexity tank since both didn't exist in the game yet. The opportunity spaces came from that document. Briar came from a ability that didn't work on Naafiri but that Design was really excited about, so we made a opportunity space out of it. So that came directly from the designers. The new ink mage was originally pitched by CarnivalKnights when he was still at Riot, he also pitched BelVeth, so neither of those came from design but they were pitched by the narrative team, not management. Nilah came from design as well, as design was interested in doing a bot lane skirmisher for awhile, and Squad5 was really excited about the space so we started a opportunity space for her.

Renata Glasc was kind of "handed down" more so that we were trying to make Silco a Champion for the Arcane moment, but Champs team met with the Arcane team and was excited to try that, we weren't "forced" into it by management. We ended up not being able to make that work but some of the abilities on Silcos kit were really cool, so we pivoted it into Renata. Zeri came from a idea to work on a Champion with Valorant, and August was really excited to work on a Champ in LoL and Valorant at the same time (he also designed Neons kit) So while that was a idea that came from upper management, we asked the team and August was really excited about the idea. If he didnt want to do it we wouldn't have moved forward.

Akshan was probably kind of in the "handed down" camp but it was a pretty loose goal that design could have gone in a million different directions with. We really only wanted to make a new Sentinel Champion for the Sentinel event. Could have been anything though. Vex had a goal "handed down" to make a new Yordle but that was because many players really wanted a new yordle after so many years, though she could have been any kind of yordle the team wanted.

To sum up, Champion oppurtunity spaces come from all different kinds of places for all different types of reasons. Design isn't the only team that pitches Champion Ideas, and if I'm being honest I'm not sure they should be. I think we get better ideas when a larger audience can pitch and generate champ ideas. Design does, imo, generate far more champion ideas that end up getting produced then any other team though.

I appreciate this comment but to raise a tangential concern, in the last few years, especially with LoR's existence, it's felt more and more like Narrative is not having enough of a priority on champion releases.

I'm not really questioning the quality or way that certain thematics are reached, but from your comment and judging the output of the last 3-5 years, it feels like League champion development should really start considering region parity and narrative roles in each region a lot more. At least IMO champions should be a microcosm of the world and their respective regions and have a diversity of viewpoints and personalities but it doesn't feel like this facet of roster diversity and utility is being considered.

E.g. Ionia and PnZ are getting champions faster than some regions that have about 1/4th of their roster. I appreciate that at least Ixtal is getting some work done now, but it really needs to be more consistent to prevent content gaps like 6 years without a Freljord champion. Meanwhile you have regions that have systemic roles that arguably should have been fulfilled by a champion, like a Mageseeker in Demacia or a Navori Brotherhood member in Ionia, these are important elements of worldbuilding that the team just isn't really delivering on. We shouldn't need Arcane to prompt the creation of a chem-baron.

For example, in the case of Zeri/Neon, as someone who plays League and who attempts to play VALORANT, I really do not see a point to that kind of link. Especially since the two champions kind of repeated the exact same thematic beats, downright to Filipino inspirations and with even some loose allusions to being AU versions of each other. But Zeri retreads too much of what Ekko had already explored for me to consider her a decent addition to the champion roster lore-wise. Which then makes me look at Neon and go "ye she's pretty cool" and instead of both characters existing with no direct comparisons, there's always the impression that League got the budget Neon.

LoR is already having to come up with exclusives (which is fine too, I'm sure they want to flex their muscles as well), and while I understand creators having preferences and products having specific analytics, e.g. I'm sure Ionia is plenty popular in general, it does feel like Narrative gets discarded more often than it should, without even going into recent slip-ups like K'Sante's bio/insights being inconsistent with the actual canon timeline or Naafiri just kind of having her dagger broken with no real explanation.

It's certainly not a case of narrative getting discarded, or not being involved. What you are suggesting would mean a lot more "handing down" a champion to Champions team and taking away some of the teams agency in what Champs get made, which I'm not sure would be great for the team. The team isn't old to make Ionia champs, and every Champion has a narrative writer on it from day 1. Narrative usually works with art to pitch what background/region a Champion will have while it's in DNA. It just happens to be that Champions team also gets excited about some of the more popular regions. We do bring up often in DNA which regions we haven't got a Champion from in awhile, but we don't want to force it if it doesn't work. We explored a Watcher Dog for Naafiri in DNA because we are aware how long it's been since we had Freljord Champion but it just didn't work very well for the kit we were making. We really want to get a Freljord Champ out soon as well.

We have explored a Mageseeker champion in the past (while working on Sylas) and it's still something we are interested in if we can make it work in game. The reason we have been hesitant is because to make a good champion you want the gameplay to match the power source/power fantasy. The Mageseekers are all about nullifying magic, and in game the kinds of kits that would do that would either be really annoying to play against (basically a kit built all around a silence mechanic) or really niche counter-pick type champ (Basically a champ that can somehow counter mages specifically like Anti-Mage on Dota) If we could figure out a gameplay kit that would be fun and healthy for the game but also deliver on the mageseeker fantasy we would be all for it, but it has proven difficult thus far.

But even if she was made for K/DA she's proven to stand as her own character, so there shouldn't be a problem to talk about it

She was made originally with the intent of making a singing based champion in League, or Runeterra's version of a pop star. We were making her before we even knew we were going to do K/DA for that worlds. At some point Joe Tung, who was the lead producer of LoL at the time called a meeting with all the leads from all the teams and said we were going to do K/DA comeback for worlds and we had a brainstorm about what cool things we could do for Worlds. I shared that Champions Team was making a pop star champion and showed early concept art for it. People loved the concept art and then we decided to make her part of the K/DA moment. The skin, twitter campaign and everything else came after that as we brainstormed cool ways to include her in the moment.
