My bad! I forgot to link the /dev blogs in the YouTube description. But the Champion Roadmap is here: https://www.leagueoflegends.com/en-us/news/dev/champion-roadmap-october-2023/
Can't wait for the new champs :D
which is the base Skarner? The one in the vid or the one on top in the blog?
/u/reav3 to answer questions since I'm not SME :) but I think it's the blog gifs (but still not finalized)
Arcane being canon is a VERY tricky one. Not only this means many champion as they say will need lore update (and if i did not miss it CAMILLE is one of them so i hope they won’t forget her) but also can we talk about VIKTOR ?
One of my limited problems (there are very few) with Arcane is that Viktor is portrayed too good to fall into the level of full machinery he is in the game. How will they even connect him to his game counterpart at this point without it feeling too forced or ruining his character ? Arcane is one of my favorite shows in YEARS and i would hate if the next season fails to live up the quality of the first one because they have to connect it to the game so i actually prefered when Arcane was its own thing so they were not fully bound by it. Now every playable character has to survive, Viktor has to become a machine and Jinx will remain on loose as the crazy person she is so the ending is already there and they have to obey it
Camille - yep, we'll definitely get her integrated into things. Still figuring out details, but confident we can make her feel a part of the cohesive whole
Viktor - I mean, can't spoil anything for Season 2 of course, but certainly more Viktor development to see. As per the larger lore conversation here we're also not going to be just picking one existing portrayal and forcing everything to move towards that, it's about doing adjustments where needed to get a cohesive whole. If that means some tweaks to game Viktor are needed, in ways that are still consistent with the core of who he is of course, definitely open to that too
Is this a confirmation that Aatrox will be featured in a cinematic? Officially?
Because if so, I am fully onboard with the direction of how things are going. I hope he's included in the upcoming cinematic. I really, really do.
I mean, it's not just some random Aatrox image that got accidentally copy/pasted into that exact moment if that's what you're asking...
That's not what they said...
Arcane is canon. League is also in that same canon.
Not having to remember which list of chromas is available is so good. Super annoying saving essence only from those chromas to not be available
Obligatory note - there will still be some of the restricted chromas (League Partner program etc) that aren't emporium eligible regardless, so still won't be included, even if the full eligible range is.
Edit: As pointed out below, the LPP chromas are actually available just at a higher price than regular chromas. If you could pretend I'd used a better example that's actually restricted that would be much appreciated...
/u/RiotMeddler if you guys are moving away from short stories, what will become of the universe and the interactive map. I get those there niche outlets with engaging with IP content, but they were central hub for all League lore
They're not going anywhere right now. I say right now because at some point (ideas thrown around, nothing yet committed) we might go through and overhaul how we present lore stuff like that on the web. Current focus though is on getting the content and consistency right internally however and figuring out where that should be reflected in different games/other experiences, before looking at supporting channels like Universe
/u/Reav3 Are you or any other rioters able to confirm what type of mage Hwei is? Has been a long time since we've gotten something other than a burst mage.
A deep and complex one
Are you able to touch a bit on Legends of Runeterra? I know a lotta people are unsure if that game's events and stories are meant to be canon as sometimes it occasionally conflicts with established lore (The Petricite Colossi for example). Would be nice to know whether LoR's stories are also in this converged canon, or if there's any stories shown in that game that Riot would wanna retcon or change
A lot of LoR's stuff is consistent with this unified canon already. Some bits will need to be updated though whenever we next release something in those parts of the lore.
Could've been an article
How does that work for future seasons though? And for Piltover/Zaun characters who are in the game but not in Arcane?
I fully support bringing certain things from Arcane to main canon (Silco, Vander, Jayce/Viktor friendship and creating hextech), but by this point the two timelines have already diverged a lot.
Echo's Forge game for example is literally impossible to coexist with Arcane in the same universe.
While Arcane doesn't show the full Piltover/Zaun cast, it's not intended to come across as characters not shown can't exist in that world at all. We don't show Mundo for example in Season 1, but that's not taking the stance that Mundo isn't or can't be a part of that shared canon, just that any given story can only include so many characters before it becomes overloaded.
there will still be some of the restricted chromas (League Partner program etc)
Aren't those usually available though, just for 10k BE instead of the regular price?
Ah crap, you're right. Ok, not the best example...
Am I crazy or is there an implication here that shyvanna and j4...
🦵😚
(I'm sh*tposting, don't listen to me)
NEW CUTE CREATURE CHAMP IS SHYVANA AND JARVAN 4'S BABY DRAGON EGG??
Lexi, Reav3, I think we need to re-evaluate our plans
Wow i didn’t expect to get an answer. So glad that you answered and also glad to hear that Camille is not forgotten.
Glad to hear about Viktor too.
Maybe it is me being a bit too emotional about this but Arcane is my favorite show in years and it is the show that made me experience the same hype, emotions and joys when i first started watching anime a decade ago but eventually lost and now i am barely getting joy out of anything i watch. So I am really hyped for Arcane and wish with all my heart that it will be a grand success like its first season and its quality and story will live up to the expectations so i am/was kinda worried about the limitations that might come from having to have thinks match up to the characters in game.
Once again thank you so much for the answer
So glad you love it!
Having a shared world certainly brings some constraints and challenges for telling stories in things like Arcane. At the same time though we're pretty convinced it gives things a lot more resonance, helps build stronger again connections if you know the character development shown will also be reflected everywhere else etc.
Just wanted to say, i really like the dev update videos. Keep it up!
Appreciated and will do. We've got one more coming this year sometime in late November at a guess, then you'll see us again at the start of January with Season Start!
Super lame they are removing blind pick for those that play it (honestly, I never did once I have draft) but quick play sounds nice. Being able to just skip like a solid 5-10 minutes of draft and just play sounds super nice
Quickplay and Blindpick over lap a lot in terms of the player needs they serve. We're confident at this point that Quickplay does so better however. That means we believe it's better to remove Blind Pick so that everyone's using the same queue, which allows better matchmaking balance and match times. Splitting the player base over multiple queues, even for a large game like League, comes with some pretty significant trade offs, so is something we want to avoid unnecessarily
You’re right... Because it’s actually Neeko!
BRB, asking if we can spend way too much money to create this as an out take...
Could I also ask how Project L will play into the new canon, or would it be up to that game team to talk about it
Yeah, that's up to that team. Our central lore focused people, like Laura in the video, certainly also work with the Project L team too though for what it's worth!
which is the base Skarner? The one in the vid or the one on top in the blog?
The one shown chucking a rock :)
one question but such cinematic is for next year season start? cuz that'd be a long time
For the upcoming January season start yeah
u/RiotMeddler with Arcane being made canon, will there be any large/overaching changes to the already established timeline? There's one scene in particiular I'm refering to, when Jayce is put on trial and Heimerdinger starts talking about what seems to presumably be the Rune Wars. But with Heimerdinger being 307 years old in Arcane, according to himself, he shouldn't have been alive to see the Rune Wars, as they happened a good 700 years before his birth in the currently established timeline. Can you talk about this one already, or are you still in the process of figuring that sort of stuff out?
Just asking, since making Arcane canon could open up a massive can of worms in terms of the established timeline
Can’t go into exact details, can say there has been more than one rune war/conflict though, some bigger, some smaller
I think they should be open to that at some point tbh.
Be careful what you wish for.
Can you share something about how the Arcane team is gonna work with Riot going forward? And why that wasn't the case before?
The answer to that question is multi-layered and complex in my mind.
Games vs. truly narrative efforts (like TV/Film) are developed very, very differently. Game development team structures (for games like League(!)) tend to be a lot flatter than a film or tv-show. Finding the right parameters/answers is a lot more iterative. Movies, tv-shows require a somewhat singular vision. The creative needs of League are very different than the needs of something like Arcane. So you have to impose quite a few changes to align certain decision making, while also trying to maximize the potential of both expressions. This sh*t is very, very hard, and there is no studio in the world that has done this well yet.
Arcane was the first time Riot ever tried to put together something purely narrative -- especially at that scale.
A bunch of the comments I see here in this thread about "execs leaning in to turn narrative into a money making machine" and stuff like that is total nonsense. Imho, the opposite was the problem. Riot teams and individuals are MUCH more empowered than in most entertainment studios -- that has its pros and cons.
I've seen some amazing improvements on this entire front over the last 1-2 years. But it takes some time to see the results. Mountains move slow.
Do you feel any pressure to put X or Y champ in Arcane or additional references to the rest of Runeterra, now that there is a shared canon? I wouldn't want every champ to be shoehorned into the show, even as a reference or cameo, since that makes the world feel small and a bit too coincidental
No pressure, no. Desire, yes. I think it's amazing when our characters interact meaningfully. I see it as part of our job to create connections that make sense and enrich the story and world. However, we will always shy away from forced fan-service.
Personally, I'm not too worried about this. I feel like we have a pretty healthy perspective on it, as lifelong League fans, but also critical drama fans.
It's terrible for gameplay clarity and he's not native to SR, he's from Ixtal so if anything he should be a more vibrant green.
We will make sure that there is good game clarity on Skarner! What we shown is the WIP.
Well... hopefully the Skarner VGU will come before 2029.
I can confidently say it will 😊
