I was excited by the new expansion, Gwen and Evelynn both seemed like amazing champions that could be paired into many cool, interactive decks. Because I understood that Gwen Braum would let me see more poros, I was confident going into this expansion that it would be a great one.

Then it all changed when Kai'Sa attacked.

I understood that running control would allow me to kill her pre-level up extremely easily. I played some Illaoi decks and splashed that new control card that deals four, perfect. I then found out that Kai'Sa players began simply not dropping her until she was half of the way through her level up, and then instantly leveling her up with her focus speed spell that essentially reads "When cast, level up and win the game."

I then looked later in the game, "What if I designed a deck around killing her once she leveled?" I thought Disintegrate, flock, and Scorched Earth would be perfect for this. I then realized that she can refresh her spellshield multiple times in a given turn, and it is practically impossible to even deal damage to her.

Despite this, there were some games where I felt like I could remove her, I used a lot of resources to do so. My opponent would misplay, and play her before she was halfway leveled. I took advantage of that, and killed her. My eyes were then pried open, to witness the sheer draw the deck was allowed to have because of her access to Preservarium and Rite of Calling. I killed the voidling she was using as a sacrifice, she simply targeted her mana gem next time.

Right now I am worried, terrified even, of queuing another game. Knowing that she will have better stats, keywords, and sticking potential than even the Lee Sin of old. I feel as if I am not allowed to interact with the deck even one bit.

All the new champions, Gwen and Evelynn, feel like they were barely even added because of Kai'Sa's sheer force in the meta. Playing Gwen felt like a downgrade once I clicked the "Play" button.

Thank you for coming to my ted talk.
