The free decks given to new players are not allowed in standard, so.... I guess I can't play ranked? I'm waiting on the Thursday cache and hopefully I'll be able to craft a deck... But this seems really limiting for new players

Yeah, it's something we're going to change. We wanted to get standard-legal starting decks in right away but there were last-minute complications that we didn't expect. It turns out that anything tied to the tutorials and new player experience isn't easy to change quickly, it has a lot of moving parts. For example, different folks currently handle the event passes and similar than handle the gameplay events and other people handle major new features.

Most stuff we make only falls within one group's area of expertise - but for the new player experience mixing with rotation all three are incredibly deeply connected. The reward track for new players (the prologue road) that unlocks new decks is something that the folks that handle event passes and quests need to manage, and it turned out that the prologue road is not easy to change or get new art assets for. Gameplay of course needs to build the decks accounting for rotation. Features handles the other aspects of the onboarding feature and how they connect to the new rotation features.

Naturally, no one is constantly working with the tutorials as part of their day to day, because they were already built. This meant that we didn't realize how much time would have to pass between gameplay finishing new deck designs and incorporating them into the new player experience until we were late into the process.

Fortunately you should still be able to get a ton of standard-legal cards quickly from the region roads and similar. There are a LOT of free rewards (make sure you claim the region road rewards regularly, because you'll earn them surprisingly fast and it's easy to lose track). Logically, I know that between a whole new expansion, the dragonmancer event, monthly challenges, all of rotation, and the deckbuilder improvement hitting all at once - some surprises were inevitable... But I still wish we'd somehow caught it much earlier.

Thanks for the update Dan! Love the communication from the team!

Thoroughly enjoying the new expansion, and excited for all rotation has to bring. Thought I'd chime in with some positivity to show my appreciation for this wonderful game and the team that built it 😁

Glad to hear it. I'm glad folks are passionate about the game and I'm glad people care as much as they do. I want to keep pushing for experiments and being willing to try stuff out, get community feedback, and iterate.
