You and millions of Trainers, Level 5 and above, can now participate in Raid Battles at Gyms all around the world. Gather your friends and family, locate a Raid using the Nearby screen, and take on the extremely powerful Raid Bosses near you!

What are Raid Battles? A Raid Battle is a cooperative gameplay experience that encourages you to work with other Trainers to defeat an extremely powerful Pokémon known as the Raid Boss.

How do you participate? Before a Raid Battle begins, a large Egg will appear atop the Gym with a countdown timer. When the countdown reaches zero, the Raid Boss will be revealed. You’ll need a Raid Pass, to battle the Raid Boss, and you can get one for free each day by visiting a Gym. You and up to 20 other Trainers can work together to defeat the Raid Boss.

Pokémon GO is in the process of being updated to version 0.67.1 for Android and 1.37.1 for iOS devices. Below are some release notes and comments from our development team.

  • Gym features significantly updated to add the all-new motivation system.
  • Added new Gym Badge feature.
  • Added in-app and push notification system for Gyms.
  • Added Raid Battles, a new cooperative gameplay experience.
  • Added four new items available only by completing Raid Battles.
  • Added Raids tab to Nearby screen.
  • Added search functionality to Pokémon collection screen.
  • Added visual indicator to unvisited PokéStops.

With summer quickly approaching in the Northern Hemisphere and winter approaching in the Southern Hemisphere, we couldn’t think of a better way to celebrate the upcoming solstices than with a Fire-type and Ice-type Pokémon GO event.

From 1:00 P.M. PDT on June 13 to 1:00 P.M. PDT on June 20, 2017, Trainers around the world will discover more Charmander, Cyndaquil, Growlithe, Houndour, Ponyta, Swinub, Vulpix, and their Evolutions. Over the next few months, we’re hosting real-world and in-game events planned alongside some very exciting new features that will get you outside exploring the world with family and friends. We want to give you a peek into certain facets of developing Pokémon GO. For this post, we thought it would be fun to dive into the inner workings of what it takes to create a Pokémon GO loading screen.

We’ve seen that Pokémon GO loading screens and their gentle reminders to stay aware of your surroundings in fun and clever ways have received a lot of attention from the community. Typically, most discussions surrounding a loading screen revolve around the anticipation players feel before they start playing a game, but thanks in large part to Mieke Hutchins—our rock star artist at Niantic—brand and design experts at the Pokémon Company, and the rest of the design team at Niantic, this hasn’t always been the case with Pokémon GO. From outstanding fan art to requests for high-resolution wallpaper versions of each loading screen, we frequently see players sharing their love for the Pokémon GO loading screens.
