I've had this issue on multiple iOS devices for months and months. I've defended the slow progress of the devs many times before but this kinda thing is honestly pretty frustrating.
I think this might be a different issue, as OP is talking about the recent bug that appeared last week.
I'd be happy to chat with you about what you're experiencing.
clicking on a game notification in iOS has resulted in the app loading, logging into game center, entering multiplayer mode, the screen turning black as the app seemingly attempts to pull up the specific game, then presenting with two black rectangle, one that says "Alert Failed to load game" up top, and one that says the same but with "Error" instead of "Alert" with centered vertical alignment. I've had this issue through multiple versions of Polytopia now and on multiple phones and one ipad running different (current) versions of iOS.

Tap on a notification
Wait for it to fail
Rapidly tap the top-right corner of the screen 5 times
When you see the prompt, save the log to your device
Email that text file to [email protected]
