A friend and I just received an Abandon Penalty in ranked due to a server disconnection. I would like to understand why the game didnt let us reconnect to the game, and why we got penalized for the servers fault.

Sorry to hear that you have received an abandonment penalty as a result of a disconnect. Those penalties are issued server side by an automated system and cannot be overturned. For more information, please see this article:
