I'm sorry to hear you're having trouble joining friends! To get a better idea of the issue, can you let me know if your friends are not showing up in the Ubisoft Connect overlay? Or do you receive an error or it times out when trying to send an invite?
As a reminder, crossplay works across console families, or across PC and streaming services. If you're playing on console you cannot play with others on PC or vice versa. If you're playing on platforms that are able to play together, then please be sure to try these steps.
