The highest StarCraft league I’ve achieved is Masters league and I got there 6 years ago mostly cheesing as Protoss so take this post with a grain of salt.
As a decent SC2 player and AoE4 player Stormgate feels to me like SC2 and Heroes of the Storm had a baby and I love it. Nothing is overly complex and the matches don’t seem to last as long as SC2 or AoE4 which I love.
Matches feel like I am trying to beat my opponent over the head with whatever move I can muster and pull off. Strategy wise I am enjoying the nuance of build orders and creep camping. I’m learning that making units can equal income by clearing camps and it’s a lot of fun while not having macro be too overly complicated and crazy. In my opinion AoE4 is macro first and sim city with large battles most of the time which got exhausting.
SC2 is more strategy with very unforgiving micro and macro. StarCraft will always be RTS on Hard Mode and that is great. SG so far seems to be a mix of easier micro and macro but with more thought to each map and objective and throwing a wrench into whatever your opponent is trying. The early StarCraft meme where it’s two people in racing chairs comes to mind.
I hope Frost Giant can continue to add interesting maps and possible even more civilizations/races in the future. I think that would be dope and a lot of fun. I love not having a vanilla map template that SC2 recently seems to follow these days. I’m excited to see the crazy strats people try on ladder and in future pro matches.
Frost Giant has a lot of opportunities to make this game amazing and the moment a meta seems to come out they can release a map or a new unit and it can keeps things fresh. Similar to how SC2 did with expansions but hopefully much more frequent.
