I had sort of heard about this, but FG today announced this website that tracks your worldwide ping specifically for stormgate: https://hathora.dev/stormgate

Please correct me if this is wrong, but my understanding is that the Stormgate matchmaker picks your opponent based on MMR and latency. But it doesn't just pick the lowest latency... it instead tries to square up your latency with the opponent by choosing what worldwide server the game will take place on. So if i'm in NYC and it finds me an opponent in Beijing, it will put our game on the Frankfurt Germany server so we both have about a 100ns ping.

Is this how it works? That is wild. Will this be the first worldwide grandmaster league for an esport?

Yes, that’s how it works. It’s how we’ve seen players in North America compete (and win) European tournaments. Players in Australia are finally able to play an RTS with decent pings.

It’s pretty cool.
