💡 Do you know what this little gold-coloured contraption is? Perhaps you're more familiar with its appearance on the right... The Mars Oxygen In-Situ Resource Utilization Experiment, or MOXIE as we may better know it, is a real life technical demonstration used by NASA. http://pbs.twimg.com/media/FsPETQYaQAI6IFe.jpg

MOXIE weighs approximately 17 kilograms, and was first demonstrated during the Perseverance rover's 2020 mission to Mars' Jezero Crater. It works by converting the carbon dioxide abundant in Mars' atmosphere into oxygen - though perhaps not as much as you may expect... http://pbs.twimg.com/media/FsPEacwaYAAAkFS.jpg

MOXIE produces 6 to 12 grams of O2 per hour; meanwhile the average human needs approx. 840 grams per day to survive. Huge amounts of O2 are also required for any launches back to Earth.
