The description for the tech actually does give its full name as the "Stirling Radioisotope Generator" - implying nuclear energy through radioactive decay - so the truncated name is likely just to conserve space! http://pbs.twimg.com/media/FVJAH_VacAEp-r2.png

@ecopragmatist @NASA Also, keep playing and unlocking more techs - you just might find some more explicitly labelled nuclear technology ;-) Maybe we should do a spotlight on the Stirling Engine technology! Do you have any resources you would recommend?
