When I recently bought and downloaded Trackmania, upon starting I always had the "Uplay not connected" message and could only play online, even though I could select Uplay in the little icons on top.
I wanted to share what was the problem in case other people encounter the same problem:
Because this is also my work computer, I had the environment variables http_proxy, https_proxy and no_proxy defined for when I VPN into the work network (I'm not connected when I play). Somehow, Uplay or Trackmania respect these and try to use them. After unsetting these variables, the game started normally.
