It’s D-Day. June 6th, 1944. 80 years ago today, Allied forces landed on the beaches of Normandy to take back France. As part of Operation Overlord, more than 150,000 Allied soldiers landed at Normandy, first by parachutes and gliders and then under the cover of aircraft and artillery and from transport ships. In total around a million people were involved in this operation.

On June 1st, 1911, the first aircraft squadrons appeared in the Ottoman Empire with the support of Germany and France. In the early years of modern Turkey, its leadership paid special attention to the Air Force and by 1940, the Turkish Air Force became the largest in the Middle East and the Balkans, with more than 500 aircraft. The Swedish Riksdag approved the founding of the National Security Forces Day on May 29th, 1940 against the backdrop of the outbreak of World War II, although territorial defense units began to be formed earlier. Today, their number exceeds 22,000 personnel, approximately half of the Swedish Army.
