At BlizzCon 2018, the WoW community got their first chance to experience World of Warcraft Classic for themselves. To help players understand what goes into bringing a Blizzard-quality experience like this to life, software engineers Brian Birmingham and Omar Gonzalez along with Game Director Ion Hazzikostas took the stage Saturday afternoon to share their insights.

Finding the Pieces

Before we could begin our journey to faithfully recreate the original WoW experience, the WoW Classic team first had to take a close look at which elements of the original game we had to work with. Ultimately, it boiled down to three main pieces: database data, art assets, and source code.

  • The database data includes aspects of the game like the hit points a creature has, the amount of stamina an item has, spawn locations around the word, and millions of other data points.
  • Art assets include everything from how a night elf looks when it Shadowmelds, to the so...

The war between the Horde and Alliance continues in Azeroth, but there are additional dark forces at work. To provide you with more insights for what lies ahead, Game Director Ion Hazzikostas was joined by designers Jeremy Feasel, and Ryan Shwayder.

The Road Ahead

The release of each expansion is its own chapter in the ongoing story of Azeroth. With Battle for Azeroth, we’re just at the beginning of our journey and much like the content release schedule for Legion, Battle for Azeroth will provide a series of both large and small content updates to take you on that journey while providing a steady stream of content and focusing on systems and rewards.

Here’s a quick recap of what’s in store for the next content update currently on the Public Test Realm.

Zeratul’s gameplay will revolve heavily around the Prophetic Vision ability, which allows the player to discover three Xel’Naga Artifact Fragments on the map. Players are encouraged to seek out these Artifact Fragments as they will improve Zeratul in a variety of ways:

  • Zeratul, his units, calldowns, defensive structures, and even Probes will gain weapon, armor, and shield upgrades with each Artifact Fragment.
  • Zeratul has no traditional researchable abilities. Instead, Artifact Fragments he finds will grant his units Artifact Enhancements, which are either new abilities or improvements to existing abilities.
  • Zeratul has a potential of four top-bar abilities, but only one is unlocked at the start of the game. Players unlock new top-bar abilities with each Artifact Fragment they find.
  • The Legendary Legion calldowns improve with each Artifact Fragment found.
  • Zeratul himself gains bonuses.

The only thing that’s constant in the Nexus is change. As mentioned at BlizzCon 2018, in the coming months we’re bringing you gameplay and matchmaking changes, feature updates, and a whole new way to earn experience with Boosts! Read on for more information.

Experience a New Experience… Experience:

One of our major goals with the 2019 updates is to implement gameplay changes that encourage closer matches and avoid the dreaded “snowball” effect. After careful design, implementation, and iteration, we felt that this best way to accomplish this goal was to slow down the “snowball effect” just as it starts to come into play. In short, we’re changing the way we reward players who prioritize push strategies to gain experience and power advantages. While we still want to reward players for pushing, we’re focused on removing the direct power advantage we give to these teams and will instead reward them with a strategic adv...

Join us as we delve into a big swing play orchestrated by Linh "Seiko" Nguyen's Malygos Druid against Kevin "Casie" Eberlein’s Miracle Rogue at HCT Germany 2018. With his back against the wall, instead of taking a line that would have put him on life support, Seiko sets himself up for a Hail-Mary top-deck.

In Hearthstone, you don’t just play with the cards in your hand—you’re also playing with the cards in your deck.

Marcin ”Ganisz” Rausch is the founder of the Academic League, now known as T-Mobile Academic League (or TMLA), the largest collegiate esports league in Poland. After a successful first season, T-Mobile partnered with the organization as a sponsor to support its mission: to build bridges between the esports and academic communities. Rausch hopes that the league can bring students together to developer meaningful relationships as they play or support their schools’ teams. In his mind, there’s no reason that universities in Poland shouldn’t be able to benefit from the promotional opportunities that collegiate esports programs bring to schools in other countries.

We spoke to Rausch about his experience starting TMLA, where he sees the league going in the future, and his love of Overwatch.
