Why, though? That takes a lot of the fun out of it. The Binding of Isaac tried this, and the devs eventually realized that it was more fun to just leave saves as they are.

Cheaters can (and already do) cheat on their regular savegames, this "measure" is only going to stop legitimate players from enjoying mods.

Several reasons. First of all, we want to keep modded content separate from the unmodded content. It’s a relatively big issue for us that modded games and modders occassionally get an unaware player and that leads to a cheat report or ruins the progression of someones game. We want people to be aware that they’re out of the game loop and let them play around with mods, while letting them keep their vanilla progress as is in case a mod changes it. We have no control over modded content, so it’s a safety measure more than anything else. It also lets the user statistics on weaponuse etc be uncorrupted by mods, because that’s data we very much use and rely upon for balancing.

You can at anytime clone your vanilla save over to a modded slot. Binding of Isaac is a different scenario too, being a singleplayer roguelite.

That said, I don’t believe it’s a hard lock, so you could probably circumvent it if you wanted to. Also it might change down the road. Who knows?

Cross-platform mods confirmed? Is DRG joining the hall of unlikely companions?

  • Skyrim
  • Fallout 4
  • Surviving Mars
  • Surviving the Aftermath
  • Farming Simulator 2019
  • Deep Rock Galactic, Soon™?

Well, this is more to say that there is no Steamworks support in this initial version. It might come later, though.

If the former, is it possible to get mods that don't lock out your save -- e.g. modding support for custom jukebox songs on the space rig wouldn't allow you to cheat anything, but wouldn't lock you into the modded realm also? Or perhaps for mods that change the texture of weapons (since this wouldn't be a cheat either)?

I believe you can progress, but only in modded games. It’s a safety precaution since it’s easy to mod in extra resources, and we don’t want anyone to have their game ruined by something like this. Cosmetic mods shouldn’t fall into this category.

Depends on what you want to do. You’ll probably need to learn a bit about how pak files work in Unreal.

To clarify, the official mod support will include three mod categories; "cosmetic", "serveronly", and "requiredbyall" (names are not final).

Cosmetic mods are mods that only you can see. This could be minor UI changes, HUD modifications, anime profile pics, or meme sound bites.
Server-only mods are mods that change the basic rules of the missions, like the amount of gunk seeds in the level, nitra- cost for resupplies, etc,
Requiredbyall mods are mods that will change the character, like giving the engineer more turrets, etc.

Cosmetic mods will have no influence on gameplay as such, and will not be separated. The other two categories can change the gameplay and will prompt you to play on a separate save game, either a clone of your unmodded save or a fresh save. You can always copy your unmodded save to a modded save slot, but not the other way around.
Modded savegames can't see unmodded games, and unmodded savegames can't see modded games. The idea...

Even with a deep dive full of nitra I don’t think you could get this much. But I have seen something like this in a modded game

It’s possible. With two players they’ll have a surplus of nitra at the very end, and if the scout doesn’t take any of the supply drops, each supply drop will let him restock to full twice and they can have around 10 drops at that point.

I kinda wish stats were removed at the end for this, people would focus more on the mission then padding a number. At least some people anyway. Revives/Downs could stay though since it's more general. Damage done would be better than "kills" if we really must have a number for it.

And this is why there’s no distinguishing between what you kill. Everything is 1 kill to avoid people tallying and ranking themselves more than necessary. In the end, it’s not about killing things, so the stats are kept simple and for reward reasons.

You complained about this a year ago too, and we actually did lower the frequency of those voice lines as a result. Some were also removed.

However, I feel like your perspective is rather narrow on this. Yes, there are a few references to memes, but even more so to movies and other pop culture references that are a great big part of the era and background that's inspired a lot of the feel of Deep Rock Galactic.

I would like to absolutely debunk any impression that we're targeting the 14-year-old Fortnite crowd. That you feel they're out of place with the game's theme is weird, because there have been farts and burps from the beginning. It's never been meant to be a grimdark universe - you can get that with Warhammer. Deep Rock Galactic is born from a love of core co-op mechanics and a bunch of classic sci-fi movies, and the humor space will reflect that in many ways, without necessarily being locked into that era specifically.

Well, this used to be a community that stuck together and it's affirming to hear stories from everyone lifting each other up. As the old times slip away from us, while the game gets inundated with cheating, shitty players, and 14 year old memelords, we'll see that tight community hang on for dear life until it turns full scale into anime horny shipping ms paint porn and a shitty global player base garbage dump.

Forgive us for trying to avoid that as long as we can.

We will prevail.

You can't kick people once the button is pushed, so...

Anyway, voting is probably not going to happen - it's impossible to do a reasonable voting system in a game with 1-4 players. Instead, we encourage people to communicate. Your urge to keep playing the mission doesn't necessarily take precedence over someone's urge to finish it.

This is definitely one of the reasons we don't go numb from streaming it twice a week.
