Were you to go back and play Alpha 1 build 1, or even just A8, you'd notice the difference easily. The game had been the same price since the start, yknow some 11 years ago, had been on sale for as much as I think 75% off quite regularly, and has far more than doubled it's content from A1 b1 in that time.
They went from $24.99 to $44.99 which is nearly double of what it was and you'd think they added double the amount of content... but they didn't. In fact, they removed content (glass jars and clothing are the big ones I can think of atm) and no one liked those changes. I am not saying they didn't add content (the challenge system, vehicle changes and armor set bonus's are cool) but the game has no reason to be $44, it is nowhere near double of what it was
And Steam specifically warns that developers may increase their prices during or when leaving the Early Access period, as developers often choose a lower-than-ultimately-intended price point during Early Access to reflect the incomplete state of the game(IE, They are offering you a lower price because you're playing it in Early Acces instead of charging you full price for admission). TFP opted to wait until they were leaving EA to change the price up to reflect the completed game, simple as that.
