Plain Clay/Argile is ONLY used for Forge recipes, never for anything else.
It is implemented in the french version of the game. "Clay Lump"s are melted in a forge to create "Clay" that is stored within the forge's internal buffer, or in your case "Sol en argile" is put in a forge to make "Argile" that is stored within the forge's internal buffer.
And just to clear up other possible confusion, Iron and other forge resources must similarly be melted into the forge reservoir before it can be used, despite the name of the inventory item being "Iron" and the forge material also being called "Iron".
