Best Aphla version

Just use it to set your baseline. Play until you die a few times, or until day 14, or 21, whatever... just get the feel for it. This isnt a game where your playthrough is eternal. It can be I guess. But the content runs out after... depending on the alpha anywhere from 14 - 21 in-game days. So you arent STUCK to the alpha you choose. The people who play longer than 21 days are playing cuz its fun or roleplay or killing time. There's no new "content" after that.

I say keep it vanilla until you play it once or twice. Then if you really want to switch, go back to... Alpha ehhhhhhh 18. or 20 If you really wanna change it up, back to 16.4

In essence, I agree with this. Try the game as is in it's most current state first. Play it long enough to see if you even like the overarching gameplay, and to tell what you do and dont like about the game, then try others.

As for versions to try at that point, I agree with A20, A18, or A16. Going much further back than that imo you lose too much of the good changes and enhancements to make it tenable.
