This was attempted back in a14. Random clothing and styles with the UMA system. It ended up being a gigantic performance hog, and would tank your client on a good PC with more than 10 zeds alive.

The core of that system is the reason we still don't have many zeds wandering about the lands in the game. Go play a13 and see how many you run into in the wild. It's almost constant.

In any case, the UMA system is being fully dumped in a20, so we should be able to see more zeds in the wild again soon.

Is there a way to have both? Variety and a well populated world? Having like 10 zombie types is great, but the cookie cutter aspect gets old quickly.... Yep, its another Moe, relax, we know what he can do. Even if only cosmetically, variety would add much to the game.
Unfortunately, It's a three way triangle and you can only move the dot around between the three corners.
Performance, Variety, Well Populated World; Pick two.

Personally I would be happy to aim for the center of the triangle, but let me guess, that's where we are now.
Pretty much, yeah.

They've stuffed in almost literally every single unique zombie model they can within the constraints of the engine.

Performance isn't quite there- But as Sylen said, with A20 they're phasing out the heavy UMA system; So the performance will be there very soon.

And with the performance comes the ability to more heavily populate the world without causing issues.

So we're pretty much in the center, all considered.
