Hello Everyone,

This year has been epic for the LEC We rebranded from the EU LCS, debuted new organisations and players, G2 won MSI, and this was the most entertaining meta in years. We made bold choices with our content, tried new cold opens, had crazy comedic segments, made deeper dives into players and teams and had a few extra special guests throughout the season.

Today several members of the LEC broadcast team, from producers to stats, will be joining the casters to answer questions from 17:00cest to 19:00cest. This thread will be live for an hour to allow everyone to upvote the questions that you all want answered most, and help us prioritize where to start!

To keep up to date with all things LEC, be sure to follow the official LEC Twitter Account and the LoLesports Stats Twitter

The LEC members available today include:

Accents for non native English speakers is a very normal thing. The LEC and me specifically chose to work with /u/Laure-Bulii-V because she is an incredibly talented interviewer, passionate, hard working and a true fan of League of Legends. There are very few league interviewers on the planet as talented and qualified as Laure is. Yes she has an accent, yes some people don't like it, but did you know that Laure is attending enunciation classes, did you know that her content is more valuable than how she says it and did you know that much loved casters like Deficio also had an accent when they first started to master their craft. Give it time, acknowledge she is working on it, we are talking about it, and you will see the growth.

Set goals for yourself, managing energy, using different descriptors, using names instead of champions, casting ultis only. Give yourself mini games from training, record them, review them, and decide what's worth including in your craft and what's not. Always VOD review, ask for peer review and always assume there is something you can do better.

Also, how is it possible you didn't cast MSI finals? You got the best voice and the way you hype is just perfect. YOU BETTER CAST WORLDS FINALS, not some NA plebs.

To /u/Ovedius Was it tough to "get in Deficio's shoes"? How hard did you have to improve or maybe it was easy to be probably the best colour caster?

To /u/RiotQuickshot Why do you consider stepping down as caster? In my opinion you are doing great job as PBP caster and honestly, you and Sjokz are the face of LEC.

Lots of love to entire LEC crew, you are doing a fantastic job!

I love casting, I will cast for as long as it makes sense, and I will do the best I can to give the best show possible everytime, but I think in the next 3-5 years there is a real chance I'll step back and focus on managing people and finding the next big casters in EU. Helping make people grow and building development systems is very exciting to me. I think there will be a day when I step off the camera, but it isn't right now, and it is definitely not in the immediate future.

I am getting older, I'm married, I have a puppy, I REALLY wanna be a dad and I'm getting to the point where working the show every week is getting harder and impacts my personal life a lot. I can't imagine how difficult it's going to be to travel to road shows and around the world when I have a baby or two, right /u/Keldith. ;)

And do more bets on Euphoria!

Right now we are knee deep in prep for Athens, RQ and Worlds. I can say with confidence that 2020 plans are on the horizon, but not yet FULLY activated. For me, it's just an expression of the feelings that I have, and that it feels natural. I gesticulate a LOT, like A LOT A LOT. I always move, wave my hands, talk with my body and it just carries through when I'm on air. I haven't done any formal presentation training at a school or anything, so I don't really know if it's good or bad, but it works for me, it feels natural and I kinda like it :P

Talk to you a bit and maybe get an autograph and a selfie or two?? You've done such an incredible job ever since the rebranding ( and before that of course) and you're making Europe proud, I've never been more proud of being a European! Cheers!!

There will be photo ops sessions, but it's not 100% guaranteed that we will get to see everyone. Generally speaking at the end of each show day there is a chance that the teams / casters will come out and take photos. If however it's a 5 game series, that sometimes cuts the casters out, as we have to prepare for the Sunday show and get some rest. On Sundays if we have 5 games, then the venue restrictions mean we have to leave pretty quickly and break down the stage and tech.

Short answer is yes, there is a chance, but long form, don't build up expectations that this is the ONLY thing that will make the weekend enjoyable! With some luck and timing you can say hi!

You're obviously still new and going through the backlash from the viewers that all new caster go through but we usually don't get a perspective on until they've been accepted by the viewers. You obviously have a lot of talent and have been improving over the split. Good luck man!

The newest thing for me has been writing a lot more comedic segments, specifically stuff like LEC Update. I really enjoy that sort of writing so I've been really happy to see the positive comments on those types of segments. Looking forward, I want to start writing a lot more stuff like that!

Originally I wanted to be a color caster, I’ve always had a love for deep strategy and it felt like color casting let me scratch that itch. But as time went on, and I surrounded myself with more and more color casters, eventually someone had to PbP. I tried it and enjoyed it immensely. When it came time to apply for Riot I actually went through a massive crisis of faith as I was offered opportunities as either a color or a PBP. In the end I chose PBP and while I’ve since been a host and analyst on the desk, I’d say my strongest role is still clearly PBP.

Getting into esports and casting was quite easy at first but progressively got harder. I started as a graphic designer and writer, eventually joined a podcast and finally started casting. At it’s hardest my life consisted of waking up at 6pm prepping for casts/podcasts, casting LJL at 10PM till around 4am. Then going to my actual job at a coffee shop to open for 6am,working till Noon then going home to sleep. Rinse and repeat. More often than not that meant 80+ hour weeks, I was kind of a masochist. Luckily for me it paid off and eventually I went from casting LJL and Collegiate to working on premier events like IEM and Kespa Cup. From there Riot tried the whole duel stream thing, meaning they needed A LOT more casters, lucky for me I was at the top of the hiring list.

With regards to big games like MSI finals or anything else, PBP assignments are really tough. On any finals broadcast there are usually 4 slots for color casters (2 in tri-cast, 2 on analyst desk) and only 1 for a PBP, so competition is incredibly high. Riot is lucky enough to have a lot of world class PBP’s. Which as you can Imagine makes it really hard to get that single slot. Appreciate the love, hopefully I’ll get a final soon.

You mentioned how people keep hating you for one thing, even if you haven't done it in a very long time (e.g. legacy) or only remembering you for specific things that don't have anything to do with your actual casting (Enders clothes, Flexius,...). You also told a story how people like Deficio or Papa are liked so much now, that no matter what they do, people perceive it as great, even if they themselves find it rather cringeworthy afterwards.

My question is: If you could choose how the crowd perceives you, what exactly they notice about you, what would it be? Obviously it should be casting-related, but you have to take into consideration that the people as laymen just don't know that much about the "art" of casting, so how would they be able to notice the specifics? What would you like to hear other than "I liked your cast because your way of explaining what was happening when Caps did XYZ made me understand that outplay on another level"?

/u/Mediccasts: What were your 3 best casted games?

I would like people to think I have a really good sense for the game. Coming from relatively high elo/the playtest team, I understand a lot about matchups, macro, and can really understand how pros think about the game. I'm also super energetic in casts and try to help my cocasters build the hype for some truly epic moments.

I produce videos such as the playoffs teaser that was just released. I also produce: Between 2 Iverns, Training Grounds and EU Rising and interview the players for our content after the games. All the pros are pretty amazing to work with especially since quite a few can be shy and and most are not native English speakers, with this in mind its always incredible to see how much effort they put into the interviews and helping us make content. A few special mentions:

  • Bwipo: I once wanted to see how long he would talk if I just asked him an open ended question and didn't stop or interrupt him.. he spoke for 40 minutes non stop and every second was interesting.

  • Caps: He used to not be that strong in interviews but has since become one of the best and always comes up with amazing 1 liners for us to use.

  • Maxlore: Generally incredibly witty and fun to talk to, often has a lot of insight.

  • Jizuke: Always really funny and has the best laugh in the LEC

  • Broxah: Pretty much the nicest human being alive

  • Upset: Carry Potter

I honestly really enjoy working with and interviewing all the players though and they all bring something unique to every piece of content.

For Drakos / Medic / Quickshot: How can you train to get the words out quickly without stumbling and still sound natural and easy to listen to?

For Laure: Being an interviewer, I assume you talk to players a lot off camera - how hard or easy was it to develop a relationship to everyone so that they and you feel comfortable during interviews on camera?

As part of my responsibilities I am directly responsible for the on-air talent team. Hiring, performance management, development of craft, expense approvals (Boo), budgetting etc. Think of it as any people manager position, but in addition to being a caster on the broadcast. It's a lot of work and I have a lot to learn, but I'm really thankful that I have such an amazing team to work with and that the LEC entrusted me with this ability to grow myself, and the team I work with.

Gamescom 2014, August 14th. I remember it vividly because it's my birthday, I had been casting League for Riot for over a year and a half and I was preparing for a showday, stood backstage and just had this epiphany... holy sh*t, I'm here, all the way from South Africa, my job is to actually cast League at Gamescom. I think for the most part it's still highly unlikely that any of the 3rd seeds get dropped in play-ins. Most of the smaller regions are getting stronger but not to the point where I think teams need to be scared of getting put in 3rd seed. Would really love to see a major region knocked out though, as long as its not EU. :p

-Do you enjoy your life in EU considering you are originally from NA. What are the major differences?

My life in EU is much more comfortable than my life in NA was. There were a few big changes for me. The first is living in a city with really good public transportation options, I'm originally from Portland Oregon which is actually quite good by NA standards but pales in comparison to Berlin. Having the freedom to move around the city without needing to deal with traffic (one of the things I hate the most) is excellent. Additionally I can actually afford an apartment in Berlin (Looking at you LA) and I get to live in one of the most multi-cultural cities in the world. Plus I've avoided some "difficult," years in the USA. I don't want to get into politics so I'll leave it at that. insert trevor/deficio clown gif here

/u/RiotQuickshot

In terms of time frames, those are likely to change, but in terms of bringing guests in from other games or Leagues, that is 100% coming back in 2020. I fought really hard in 2018 to get a few guests on the show, then it worked and I got budget approved for the 2019 season and our guests worked out. The LEC really likes this element of our show and we want to bring it back next season, HOPEFULLY improving upon what we have learned this year.

  • What are some less obvious preferences that you might have between casting vs post game analysis?

  • I imagine it will be covered on the broadcast but who's your contender for EU's 3rd worlds spot? (assuming Fnatic and G2 are the favourites for the top two seeds)

  • Can we stop bullying Quickshot? :(

  • Finally, when is the LEC crew dropping their debut album?

Yup. I fought really hard to make this a thing when I was promoted in 2018, and fortunately it worked and I was able to expand. It's super important to recognize that so many people come together to make this work. The entire broadcast team has to step up to welcome guests that don't know our show, our systems, our staff and in some cases, they don't know our League. It's been a really fun challenge that fortunately a lot of fans have appreciated.

I think that's because both stories are true. It varies from caster to caster and player to player, remember that not every player is as comfortable on camera which can also lead to the appearance that there is no synergy or comraderie. This is a really wide topic to unpack.

I can't speak to directly comparing other broadcasts because I don't know the intricacies of how other teams operate, build their shows, decide on content direction.

What I can say is that the 2019 season of LEC has been the single best of our entire career. Comparing 2019 EU to previous years, our team matured, developed a new level of trust, understanding and willingness to try bold ideas and this feeling was shared across our entire office. What makes us stand out, is our ability to be brave and take deliberate actions with our content to try differentiate our broadcast from the rest of the world. I'm very proud of how our team has evolved vs our former selves!

And who is the best Yasuo on the broadcast team?

I am the best Yasuo hands down, no contest.

The dynasty kings legacy stuff usually comes down to how we as a broadcast team decide to describe and summarize the achievements of our top teams. Which I think is quite powerful and sounds super cool as long as it's not overdone. G2 had a dynasty 2016-2017, total domination, I never regret calling it that. But the repetition of it to the point where it becomes a meme is definitely not intentional. XD

The Semi Final series on Saturday will be cast by /u/RiotDrakos /u/Ovedius and /u/endercasts with me managing the on stage show openers on each day.

So yeah we'll probably see them more in the future :) This split I made the choice to cut back on them so that the various family members weren't overbearing and started to annoy people. Moving into 2020, I hope we can introduce new family members while utilising the old ones when it makes sense.

I think flex picks make the meta way better because it gives you so much more freedom in draft. The games become less predictable and there are more variables that have to be factored in. To me, this ultimately makes watching the game more interesting because it's not as cut and dry as old metas have been.

The worst one btw was "scale until baron spawns". I don't remember what season it was but that was definitely the worst.

I'm refering to EUphoria S4 E6 (Unofficial Mid-split awards), where the three color casters /u/thateuropeanfangirl, /u/Ovedius and /u/Endercasts discussed how they felt they were perceived by the viewers/reddit.

This is a difficult question. I think I'd really like it if people noticed the difference in my game knowledge from even last split to now. The other colour casters and I have spent a huge amount of time building relationships with pros, analysts and coaches to better understand the game the way the pros do and I'd like to think it's showing, but I'm not sure. While I don't think I'm the smartest guy on the planet regarding league, I think I'd just like it a lot if people appreciated the effort that I put into improving it and could notice the differences.

At the end of the day though, if a viewer listens to me and learns something new from a cast, I feel like I've done my job. I think a lot of the time I get bogged down in the "I need people to agree with my analysis" and forget that there are WAY more players that just want to learn more about the world of pro players and what it takes to be one. So if I could do that for a lot of people, that would be awesome.

-How do you manage to speak so many languages fluently? I am currently learning my 4th language (french), but i struggle really hard. Do you have any tips?

-Considering you have been there from beginning, what do you think about the evolution of the EU scene? Is there anything that stands out for you?

-Which teams do you think are the top 5 in the world right now?

-Do you think G2 is going to meet expectations at worlds? Are the teams maybe going to figure G2 out?

-What do you think about Griffin? Considering they all have nearly no international experience, do you think they will falter under the pressure?

-WHat champion is completly falling under the radar right now?

-Is there going to be a rap battle for worlds?

-Do you think there is a realistic chance for the 3rd seeds to be stuck in play-ins? (looking at NAs 3rd seed situation)

-Do you enjoy your life in EU considering you are originally from NA. What are the major differences?

-What would you like to see EU teams improve on?

-Why is IG struggling right now?

-Is FPX objectively the best team in the world? Do you think Doinb will get his "debuff" again, or will they perform at worlds?

-Which 3 chinese teams would you like to see at worlds?

-Do you think teams are getting away with bad drafts because players are too lazy/uncomfortable learning their counters, or in general adapt to the situation and make those drafts kinda useless? (Like LS says specifically about champions like Aatrox or Tahm)

-What do you think are the major differences between the LEC and EU LCS?

-Is there something you would like to do on air, or do you have to follow specific guidelines from Riot NA, considering the limited time you have since the LCS starts right after the LEC.

-Are you looking to expand the team for 2020?

  1. I haven't done a super indepth review on every region, but if I were to choose 5 (not in any order) it would be Fnatic, G2, FPX, RNG and either SKT or Griffin. I haven't seen enough of Griffin to properly judge them, but I did think Damwon was actually a stronger team than SKT coming into playoffs, unfortunately it's hard to make that argument given they lost 3-0. I'm really hoping Griffin beat them though!

  2. I think G2 will live up to the hype. I genuinely believe that not only are they as creative and aggressive as the LPL teams, but they have a genuinely good understanding of the game. They are the best parts of LPL and LCK combined into one. The biggest risk they have is their over confidence. I can see them losing BO1s, but right now, I don't see them losing a BO5.

  3. As mentioned above, I've barely watched any Griffin this split. I'll be studying their finals a lot and their week 10 performances but I can't comment on them much right now unfortunately.

  4. Nocturne. Buffs were really solid. He's a great jungler (and mid laner). I'm not biased. I swear.

  • The on-air team,

Was there ever a moment in your career that you thought ‘Damn, I’ve made it!’. If so, was there any one event that sparked this feeling or was it a gradual build up? P.s. LEC has been amazing to watch this year so thank you!

At worlds in 2018, I was in a room with a number of casters, and we were talking about prep. Somewhat out of nowhere, Deficio said that he thought I was the hardest working colour caster at the event and had done a great job. It's hard to describe how much that meant to me, but I genuinely felt like I'd only go up from there.

/u/Ovedius do you still stand by the fact that SKT will be exploited on Worlds? And do you think refusing to scrim (like SKT) other teams is good?

The problem with the word exploited is it makes it sound like they're a garbage team. I used it because the impressions I got when I tweeted that Damwon should 3-1 SKT was that fans believed SKT was back to being the best in the world. A lot of other fans seem to feel this is not the case.

Aside from that, I believe their mid game issues are obvious enough that they can be exploited. Namely, their reluctance to play on the offensive when having a gold advantage, often skipping steps in their objective set ups and a strange obsession with contesting every drake. These are all things that I think will hinder them from winning worlds if they continue to play like this. Top EU and LPL teams can and will exploit this in my opinion. That's not to say I believe they are a terrible team. I still believe that their early game is very strong, the Clid/Faker duo seem to be performing at a high level and Teddy is once again popping off.

If they do refuse to scrim other teams, I think it can hurt them, namely because of how much EU and LPL has grown in the last year. However, they have a long legacy of succeeding so maybe their way of practicing is the better way.
