Wanted to quickly mention that we’re planning on doing a quick hotfix on Monday or Tuesday to address the number of bots showing up in games where they shouldn’t be. There was a tweak made earlier this week that resulted in bots being mixed in with higher level matches. This wasn’t intended and we’ll be fixing it.

All multiplayer games on Xbox require Xbox Live Subscription, as far as I know. That's a Microsoft thing. PS4 does not require anything to play (we do not require PS Plus).

If it's any consolation I played on the regular PS4 and it was so horrible that I deleted the game. Frame drops, complete freezes, texture not loading ( even other players, try hitting a pair of gloves flying around! ) and my all time favorite, map loaded after I landed so it loaded on top of me where I could move under and won because circle couldn't hit me.
I understand the game is new but come on, games like Warzone with better graphics and a ton of players runs smoothly.
Sorry to hear about your problems! This sounds very likely that the hard drive you installed the game on is unable to load data fast enough. External drives can vary widely in quality/loading speeds; try installing on the system drive. If you already installed on the system drive, that may indicate the drive is starting to fail. :(
