I hate to say it, but I'm just not, and I think that's largely due to the way temtem evolve. There's a lot of issues with the game right now, and a lot of people are upset about "endgame" and "economy", which is fine, because it's in a bad state, but remember we don't have an endgame or economy yet, the devs are focusing on finishing the story. But if the standard story gameplay is a turn off, I think we have a big problem.

I'm just not looking forward to stepping into the first tall grass, catching a level 50 sparzy and finding out I need to level him 20 times to evolve him. Now I guess I'll go back and breed him once, then grind for 10 hours to get him to a reasonable level to find the next tem in the tall grass...

Part of the fun of creature collection games (the majority of it?) is finding new creatures to collect, but knowing that I really shouldn't be using the ones I catch even for story content is a huge downer that makes everything feel like a chore. Sure, ones I find won't have egg moves, their SVs are probably bad, and I'm going to mess up their TVs by using them out the gate, and I can deal with all that. But never evolving? That I can't swallow (and with the difficulty of the game attempting to play through Kisiwa with a Goti is probably not realistic).

I understand wanting to be different than Pokemon, but this really feels like a huge step back. Just make them evolve at a specific level. All through Kisiwa I didn't use a single new tem until I'd already beaten it. I really don't want to do another island like that.

I wouldn't mind a hard cap on lvl to evolve a Tem. Like "18 lvls to evolve but if it reaches lvl 30 it would evolve" kind of deal.

We don't know how leveling is going to be in the endgame, but I agree that right now, it's a pain to lvl. Maybe adding the rare candy to vendors at a reasonable price would help. Maybe some kind of "catch-up" bonus, that gives a lot of extra XP if the Tem you are lvling is at least 5 lvls lower than your highest Tem

The problem with having a hard cap is that every single Temtem on Kisiwa and ahead would just evolve by leveling one level because the hard cap would be lower than the current island level.

This is an innate problem for having different environments and having each island with its own unique Tems. There are different solutions, each one with their own unique problems:

  • Put only fully evolved Tems on the latest islands.

This is the same problem but in reverse, you would never see the unevolved versions in their natural habitats. This also generates a lore-wise problem because it doesn't make any sense to never see unevolved Tems (only when breeding) and it also generates another problem because breeding for a Tem would never be a good option in the story because you can always pick the latest evolved form in the wild.

  • Mix fully evolved and non-evolved Tems.

This is something we actually tried in the early days, mixing unevolved and evolved versions in the same spawn make sense, but everyone was just capturing the evolved forms and unevolved forms were just ignored. So, the same problems as with the previous solution.

  • Put only non-evolved Tems.

Where we are currently. One of the problems related to this choice is due to having a temporal hard level cap, which won't be a thing on the final version of the game (you will be able to get any Tem to level 100, and even if you haven't reached enough levels to evolve them, you will be able to force evolve them at max level).

There are other problems like the OP said, like having to choose between an unevolved new form versus a previously fully evolved Tem in your squad, but I don't see that as a HUGE problem, because for the story you usually don't need a perfect (or even evolved) team, you can go with what you like as long as you have a good composition and be able to complete the story with it.

TLDR; I think the current implementation is the best one. This topic has been talked about multiple times and we've gathered a lot of feedback but we haven't been able to decide on other solutions because they are worse than the current one.
