Every other month, we sit down with one studio to explore how the passionate people behind our games work to craft legendary entertainment experiences for millions of players on Battle.net.

A jaunty guitar riff, the gentle hum of conversation, and a hearty voice that beckons you back like an old friend. Each visitor that crosses the threshold of Hearthstone’s Tavern is greeted by this sequence of sounds, an arrangement that was composed with “attention and love” by the game’s talented sound crew, says Principal Sound Designer Andy Brock.

The team sits packed into Zoom’s video grid, a gallery of faces flanked by instruments, soundproofing panels, and an array of Hearthstone-themed backdrops. Their conversation flows with the comfortable ease of a chat amongst friends. “We all complement each other as designers,” continues Brock. “We’re all in sync—how everyone works with each other and how we approach our design.”

That synergy is f...

Sanctuary is a volatile place—danger lurks at every turn and Lilith’s reappearance has ushered in a new era of hardships for those unfortunate enough to call these lands home. While its denizens may not have much in the way of material goods, they make up for it with rich stories to tell.

The Tales of Sanctuary short stories will introduce a cast of new characters, with a few familiar faces sprinkled in. The first two entries into this series, “Witness” by Alma Katsu and “The Toll of Darkness and Light” by Jonathan Maberry, can be read below.

As Season Four ends, I'd like to look at the game's balance. This season we saw a wide selection of heroes get played, and for the most part, the game felt fairly balanced. From a win rate perspective, Seasons Three and Four were some of the most balanced in recent Overwatch history! With this in mind, let's look at three different topics from Season Four and talk about how they will change in Season Five and beyond. Specifically, I’d like to go over heroes like Junker Queen and Lifeweaver, one-shots, and crowd control abilities in 5v5.

There were a few standouts from a tuning perspective in Season Four. In the midseason patch, Junker Queen was given a series of buffs, and she really started to dominate. Her win rate popped up by about 5%, and she went from being one of the lowest-picked tanks to one of the highest. For most skill tiers, Queen and Reinhardt were the two most picked tanks for the latter half of the season. However, at Masters and above, Qu...

Diablo IV officially launches on June 5 at 4 p.m. PDT, opening a new plane of Hell for brave wanderers to traverse. Those slaying demons across Sanctuary will quickly notice a defining feature of Diablo IV—it is invitingly dark. This aesthetic harkens back to the universe’s roots, to the beloved gothic tones of the original Diablo and Diablo II. The first of these games came out nearly 27 years ago, and since then, the technology used to establish the visual language for video games has drastically changed.
