That's true, when you're the Admiral you have to make those tough decisions. Not all of them are going to be the correct course of action.

Sorry for the off-topic historical discussion but wanted to throw my two-cents in:

RADM Marc Mitscher, promoted 2 days after leaving Pearl Harbor en route to Midway, deduced just after the initial attack on Midway Island that the IJN CVs would be in recovery and rearm operations on the flight deck. Time was of the essence and he gambled on this. It paid off as the CAG (Max Leslie) found the flight decks of the IJN fleet littered with planes, aircraft fuel lines, and bombs.

The end result was catastrophic explosions and fires that doomed Nagumo's fleet and turned the tide of war in the Pacific.

Fast forward to 1967 when the U.S. Navy failed to learn from history and almost lost a modern aircraft carrier (USS Forrestal: CVA-59) because of a single Zuni rocket ignited and detonated aviation fuel lines causing 134 casualties and heavily damaged the ship.

"You manage things, you lead people. We went overboard on management a...

I think it boils down to getting as much information even before the battle starts. Study the lineup on the OPFOR and approach the front line with caution.

If there is a radar ship or ships present, know how close you can approach and when you can expect to be painted with radar or even hydro.

Using the terrain is also helpful as you approach, you may be spotted and then painted but if you are in good cover the radar detection is rendered harmless because no shots can land on you and you just have to wait out the storm and decide your next move.

Love my Hotlanta! It even does well when uptiered in VIII and IX games!

The destroyer skill level does increase as you go higher up the Tier tree, however the capabilities of your warship increases too.

Playing aggressively in DDs may work at lower tiers but with radar, hydro, fighter planes, and even other destroyers in the mix, a destroyer captain must carefully realize the risks versus the benefits of their tactics and strategy.

Do I play aggressive and contest the cap while risking an early exit back to port?

Or do I play more conservatively and live longer while risking falling behind on points and have allied cruisers and battleships take enemy fire and losses?

Tough questions that only destroyer captains can answer depending on the situation, their strengths, and the makeup of ships on the OPFOR.

The "Lucky Ship" has been pretty good to me lately!

I also have been having success in the Seattle. I know it's not a popular cruiser but being able to repel destroyers and grind down other cruisers and battleships makes it on my regular rotation!

My guilty pleasure ship is the Irian, good DPM and the stealthy torpedoes make it an unlikely hero in many battles!

Despite the CV rework since 0.8.0 I still play destroyers often. Have I changed my gameplay, a little bit. Extending too far makes me vulnerable to carrier attack planes armed with rockets so I don't charge in at full speed trying to race to the cap.

Instead going at full speed with a cruiser a few KMs behind then cutting the throttle as I approach the cap or spot incoming planes and allowing them to catch up means I can use the cruiser's AA bubble for protection and to discourage the incoming planes from picking me off. It may not work sometimes but it gives the CV player pause as the chances of their squadron taking severe losses may not be worth attempting to damage a destroyer.

It works a little more than half of the time so I'm sticking with it!

Since CVs appear to be a hot topic now, may I direct your attention to Public Test 0.8.4:

A major bullet point is CV updates which I invite everyone to try out on the PT server.

Try it and let us know what you think in the feedback portion.

Ahoy Fleet!

Before doing any drastic such as resigning your commission, check out Public Test 0.8.4:

We are still in the process of adjusting aircraft carrier gameplay and your testing/input is valuable in pointing us in the right direction.

Give it a try and let us know what you think!

Which cruisers in your Fleet dish out the most damage to the enemy?

Cruisers are known for high damage per minute from both their main battery guns and sometimes a lethal torpedo armament.

Whether it is a high rate of fire or well placed high caliber shells and torpedoes, cruisers make up for light armor protection with the ability to rain death on their opponents.

Of all of the cruisers at your disposal, which one puts out the most damage or has sunk the most ships?

CV updates are currently underway in Public Test 0.8.4. We are doing our best to adjust and balance but we also need participants to test it out and provide their feedback.

For more information about the current Public Test, read about it here:
