Ok. From the main menu he should be able to find the world under the "your worlds" option. There's a section there for local saves. Once he loads the save you should be able to join.
If the save is missing then I would guess that it got corrupted and you will probably have to start again.
As far as I know, ECO still suffers from a memory leak issue so I would advise hosts to close and relaunch the game every few hours to clear the memory and help avoid crashes.
A crash often leads to a corrupted database as databases do not like to be exited ungracefully, restoring a backup from the backups folder should be enough in that case, no new start needed.
Specialization is “unlimited”, you can level up your overall character level as many times as the server has time for but level xp requirements grow exponentially. If you play hard everyday for a 30 day meteor you may get 10 specializations but it’s wildly variable depending on the server as some give multipliers to increase level speed, how good your food variety and quality, as well as how good your housing is.
As for specialization level, yes the cap is 7.
Keep in mind that different servers have different settings for the speed in gaining stars and that required XP only grows exponentially until a specific star number, after that you always need the same amount of XP.
5 wide is enough to have 2 trucks pass and fits a claim.

It’s a “survival” game but you can’t die. It’s more about building a community together to achieve a common goal. Depending on what games you’re coming from this is likely a slower more relaxed pace. There can be a bit to lear but it isn’t too bad. Take your time and find the right community to play with and you’ll have a blast. I run a great server if you’d like to join us. Everyone would be happy to help.
We call it Eco: Global Survival for a reason - the survival aspect is towards the planet, not the player.
