You can hide the battle pass notifications from the settings so you'll never see anything related to it if you don't want to.

The battle pass only gives cosmetics and premium currency which you can only spend on more cosmetics, so 100% cosmetic oriented and optional.

This works like that with every single game that adds trading cards after is launched. Users that already clocked time will get the ones that would have gotten back in the day. It's an automated process by steam.
