Yeah, that's part of optimisation!
The world is divided into square chunks, where units are cached based on their current kingdom (even mobs like demons have hidden 'wild' kingdoms under the hood).
When a unit looks for a threat or enemy, it first checks the chunks around it for enemy kingdoms, rather than going through all the surrounding tiles and individual units.
Which also works like a sight, which could result in this behaviour you see.
The real question is: when will we be seeing the NEXT Steam post??? ;)
