In situations similar to this, we see an effect of allowing players to adjust their minimum input threshold settings (dead zone) to lower values such as zero. As players approach zero, the amount of random registered input increases depending on the controller's physical state. Because aim-assist is input dependent, the aim-assist tracks with the randomly registered inputs and helps create a perception that it is "strong" or "advanced" by seemingly working without player input.
Place the controller back into the player's control, and the aim-assist operates as expected.
