Amazing fan art of the trypophobia iteration of the Warden was made by Reddit user u/HallsOfFlameSs
Absolutely love this, it really captures what we were going for at the time - there is no real gore, but the coloration of its skin and the openings/holes are still disgusting

And here was the Stalker at one point, testing out it transforming into its form that could squeeze into smaller tunnels.
It's really interesting looking back at iterations like this and seeing where the Warden actually ended up. Very proud of the work we did as a team.

That Sculk with a version of the Stalker
And here is another version which was what Sculk looked like with the Stalker iteration
When we went the typophobia route for the Warden, this is what Sculk was going to look like at one point
Keep in mind these were textures I made myself, so the art team hadn't touched these yet!
creepier* Ah I wish Twitter had an edit button
The only idea I still really like is it faking glowing items that you'd find throughout the biome. That didn't make it in the end because there'vs already a lot going on with the Warden's design, and it felt better to focus on its "lack of vision" aspect more deeply.
We didn't go for this version because asymmetry is really had to get looking good in Minecraft, and it often looked "out of place", and not in the way we intended. The transforming ideas also proved too clunky in practice. It worked, but felt goofy not scary.
It was the tallest mob we ever had that walked, taller than an Enderman. It had a much creeapier vibe in how its focus visually was to be asymmetrical, it really stumbled and would transform into weird shapes to adapt to its environment
Those totems would hold glowing loot, and this would be a way that Stalkers would trick prey (players) into walking up to it.
The Stalker would also be able to transform its body into a quadrupedal creature, being able to run through 1x1 block holes even if you tried to dig away
Some ideas we had for early iterations of the Warden.
Stalkers were going to have a glowing item in the middle of its chest that you would also randomly find throughout the biome floating on totems. The idea was Stalkers would stand perfectly still to "fake" those glowing items.

The amount of work that we have put into iterating on the Warden has been quite a journey. I really recommend if you want to see part of that process, this new video will give you some more context
