And more importantly, sound design. Zombies and Skeletons were always terrifying for me, not because of their looks. Their looks are cartoony and blockish in nature. But hearing their groans and clanks in a dark cave terrified me. The Warden focuses MUCH more on sound for horror.

I think the Warden as it is currently does a better job of that, I hope. It can look goofy, it's not explicit, it's not gory. But it makes you scared of what you don't know, the horrors you can't see in the darkness. The sudden loss of tools you could always rely on.

Many of the first iterations focused too much on horror in a way that Minecraft doesn't. Minecraft doesn't have gore, explicit sources of disgust or mechanics that purposely try to scare you. I think Minecraft's horror is organic, emergent - it's always the monsters you don't see

The Warden has been really tough, because horror in Minecraft is a tricky thing to balance. And what level of horror is acceptable? Is it really a part of Minecraft's DNA? We think so, but execution on that is challenging. So many of the first iterations failed to deliver balance

Working on vanilla often feels like trying to recapture the magic of Minecraft all over again. Trying to get to that level of polish and finetuning is the challenge, and it requires many iterations. How can we make something as iconic as the Creeper again? It can feel impossible.

For those who've been curious why some features in vanilla Minecraft seem to take time, I hope the recent behind the scenes content concerning the Warden's development helps give context.
