also have you seen some of the mods these days? They're straight bangers, and look like they could fit right into vanilla. Of course not all are vanilla-compatible, but many are. Feeling like a mod != bad for vanilla
imo "this new feature in Minecraft looks like a mod" pretty much means nothing at this point It's become more common feedback in recent years but I don't remember anyone saying it when the Ender Dragon came out, which to me is the most modded-looking feature in the game

Honestly I kinda remember a point in the game's development where the community was actively excited about Mojang adding something which was from a mod. Feels like the sentiment has shifted where "looking modded" has become a negative thing

Everything looks modded until it's a part of the game. Pistons and horses were inherently mods - no one things of them as "looking modded" anymore.

Usually these changes would be delegated to a major release like 1.20. It's nice to be able to get more quality of life changes in-between major releases. And all the technical additions and bug fixes that have come into 1.19.3/1.19.4 have been amazing for the community.
1.20 has been exciting to work on, but my favourite part of development at the moment are the little tweaks that we release earlier in minor releases (like 1.19.4). This is a new approach for us and I think it's fun to get small design changes like armor swapping in-hand earlier
