Firstly, if you play locally disable STEAM cloud to avoid this issue. STEAM cloud gets the saved game corrupted.

Remember also that in the main campaign map screen you have the option to make backups of your progress so you have more files to be safe.

What is the message you get when you try to load your saved game file?

Patches that are not present on GOG version add only availables features on STEAM, so both versions work exactly the same depending on the features they have in each platform.

You can also try to do a new full reinstallation of the game.

Check if any of your gpu software can be interfering with a proper launch of the game
