Yeah, absolutely! I definitely understand your frustration. I don't have access to replays (I wish I had time to build a system like that though!), so I'll take your word for how it went. I hope the MMR balances out for you, and your matches are close and fun :)

It's also important to note that MMR only adjusts when you complete a match. We've had issues in the past with people quitting out of losing matches and their MMR would only stay the same or go up on wins, creating a horrible feedback loop of harder and harder matches that they would leave. It doesn't look like you did that at all, so you should be good though!

Hey! I'm sorry to hear you're having a less-than-optimal experience with the skill-based matchmaking. I took a look at your match history, and it looks like you won your first 4 games, and placed 3rd in your most recent game, in which the top-scoring player was a middle-of-the-road bot (OIandese). I can acknowledge that some of the higher level bots can be aggravating to play against, but that particular bot has 40% accuracy and shouldn't be landing every shot unless there's a bug I'm not aware of. Regardless, the skill-based matchmaker tracks how you perform, and adjusts the difficulty of who you play against, both bots and players alike. It might be important to note that your first 5 games put an artificial handicap on your MMR that is slowly lifted, so the result may be that your MMR is a bit inflated because you've only won your matches so far. In "Couch" mode in MageQuit, you can add bots to play against, completely offline if you'd like. Playing alone, you could add up to 9 bots (I would recommend 5 bots for a 6-player game). You can also set their difficulty from 1-10. I like playing against level 9 bots because I usually lose to level 10 bots 😅

The main reason we don't have that (at least for non-private lobbies) is to create replayability in the default game mode, and to create a rubberbanding mechanic to help losing players potentially catch up by picking spells they are more familiar with.

Are you asking for a mode that lets you just straight up pick exactly which spells you want before starting your first round? If the issue is that you don't want to spend a bunch of time drafting spells, increasing the total number of rounds will decrease the percentage of time you spend drafting vs actually fighting.

Also, the 1v1 mode could potentially work for more than 2 players in the future, I just figured there would be too many redundant spell loadouts for it to be fun with more than 2 players.

I can look into what kind of work that would entail, but I do know it wouldn't work for cross-platform play because consoles wouldn't be able to use the same mods. Party only games on all PC would be the use case for mods I think.

Hi Varuna! Yes, you can definitely do everything you mentioned in your question, except for the last thing: number of teams maxes out at 2, so 3v3 and 5v5 is possible, but not 2v2v2v2v2. Might be fun to do a 5v5 (5 humans vs 5 bots) and see how hard of bots your friends can beat. Bots go from 1-10 in difficulty, and if you are playing online, bots even have an "auto" difficulty, which adjusts to your skill over time; the more matches you play the better handle on your skill the game gets.

One final thing I should note is that in Couch mode you actually can go up to 3 teams; that's just something that we haven't added to Online mode at this point.

Are you talking specifically about couch play? Or having more than one player on a single PC? If you are playing online on your own PC, you already have the option to toggle spell cooldowns on from the pause menu. Actually, when we started working on MageQuit 6-7 years ago, the cooldowns were initially as you described, around the edges of the screen. In the theory, it sounds great, but the issue we ran into immediately was, players get used to looking at a certain part of the screen for their cooldowns, but since everyone in couch mode is looking at the same screen, there's no guarantee that you'll always get the same corner or side of the screen every time you play. The above-head cooldowns are also crucial for knowing what spells your opponents has available at a glance. I know having just an icon with a color means you have to memorize all the spells essentially, but this we the best middle ground we could figure out given the constraints.

Yeah! You can queue into FFA with a party of up to 3 players. If you want to queue with up to 5 players, it'll have to be teams (Chaos mode is 4v4 or 5v5). If you have more players than that, you might as well just do a private match :)

I should add, the fact that it hangs is due to your game not being able to retrieve your game progress from our servers (XP, gems, unlocked wardrobe, etc). So while the game is "playable", you won't be able to level up, earn gems, unlock wardrobe items unless those calls make it through.

No problem! I usually don't assume that it's a firewall issue because most players aren't power users, but you clearly are hahaha. You could try adding an exception for bowlcutstudios.com, and maybe even magequit.com and see if that helps!
