@MikeSnider12 This is how it works, yep - if you have melee in hand you'll block in a narrowish angle.
We're looking to spend another week (ish) on melee 2.9 as we address years of stuff made to rely on the old 'modal' system. Good news is that the FX team gets more time to juice it. And they are juicing it!
