Behind them, the 26th Volksgrenadier and 5th Fallschirmjager divisions were ordered to encircle US positions.

At Noville to the north of Bastogne, two US battalions under Major Desobry are coming under attack from the weight of the entire 2nd Panzer Division, which is steaming south.

Mixed units of paratroopers and tanks are positioned at key strong points around Bastogne, to stall the panzer divisions.

By the afternoon on December 19th, the US reinforcements had arrived in force at Bastogne.

The 101st’s regiments were split up, to cover different approaches to the town.

Having resumed his division’s advance, Fritz Bayerlein has reached Neffe, just two miles from Bastogne.

Heavy fog obscures any view of the town, and reports reach him of US tanks to his rear, so the General decides to retreat and secure his flanks.

The first parts of the 101st Airborne Division have begun to arrive in Bastogne, joining Combat Command A (CCA) of the 10th Armored.

The Panzer Lehr division has reached Margaret, after covering less than 4 miles in four hours of marching.

Convinced that the 101st Airborne must still be some way away, Bayerlein allows his troops to rest for a few hours.

General Fritz Bayerlein, the commander of Panzer Lehr, is taking the shortest-possible route to Bastogne, on incredibly narrow, muddy tracks leading to the hamlet of Margaret.

His orders are to be in the town that night, without fail.
