South of Bastogne, the 109th Regiment of the 28th Infantry Division has now been battling for several days against two full German infantry divisions.

Outnumbered 6.5:1, the 109th has stopped the Germans from advancing even past their first day objectives.

17th December 1944.

Across the Ardennes today, 11,000 trucks are moving 60,000 Allied troops in the battle area simultaneously. It’s a logistical capacity that the Germans couldn’t hope to match.

American Military Police are out in Rheims, rounding up those members of the 101st Airborne out drinking.

Just two weeks after arriving for rest after fighting in Operation Market Garden, the division is shipping out to the front again.

To implement this plan, Eisenhower mobilised his reserves; the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions.

The 101st was to be sent to hold Bastogne, along with the 10th Armored division, transferred from General Patton’s 4th Army.

At his HQ in Paris, General Eisenhower has set out his plan to repel the German attack.

Key road junctions would be held, and the flanks of the attack halted

The aim was to keep the Germans east of the river Meuse, so a counter-attack could be prepared.

Noon, 16th Dec.

The strongest German advance has been halted on the Elsenborn Ridge, while further south the 106th US Division is in danger of getting itself encircled.
The first reports of the German attack are reaching General Eisenhower in Paris.

5:30am, 16th December 1944:

A massive artillery barrage from 200 guns has just erupted along German positions in the Ardennes.
200,000 German troops advance, against 80,000 American troops taken almost totally by surprise.

@loyal_pilsner Obviously we don't rule anything out for the future, but we focus on other things at the moment :)

The Allies thought that the bad terrain in the Ardennes made an attack there very unlikely.

The sector was used to blood in divisions newly arrived from the US, and to rest those that had been fighting elsewhere.
At sunset on December 15th, all seemed calm.

By December 1944, the situation had grown bleak for Germany.

To try and reverse things, the Wehrmacht planned an offensive with their remaining western reserves from the Ardennes to the coast, to retake the port of Antwerp and split the Allied armies in two.

The Siege (20-27 December) saw encircled American troops defeat German attempts to secure the town of Bastogne.
