[2022] Does the referral program work with the trial / buddy pass?

Just wondering if anyone knows the answer to this. Referral program says the recipient has to play 3 hours in order for the reward to unlock, wasn't sure if they had to purchase the game or if playing on buddy pass was sufficient. Thanks!
