It was pretty similar to Rank in siege. Where you had time to join back before your team exfiled or died. Also you couldn't join another Quickplay game until your teams match was over and if you couldn't join back in then there was a penalty.
It would be a very great feature to bring back for Maelstrom, at least. I can see why it could be an issue in Quickplay but I don't know why it was removed.
