Please, check that you antivirus or firewall is not blocking a proper game saving. Also if you play locally you should disable STEAM cloud that also brings along several issues like the one you are suffering.

However, I would like to ask you about the possibility of setting up an infinite mode (no time limit to see how long you can last) or, if that is impossible, to set up a game mode that lasts 500 or 1000 days, where you are attacked almost constantly, for example from day 200 onwards.

It was listed on its Steam store page as a Linux game. I think I actually found it via a Linux-only search and then saw it listed Linux (and Mac) support and added it to my wishlist. This was before EA release I think.

Probably the game has not the rights to modify its own files like the Configuration file. Try to check the OS permissions or your antivirus or firewall blocking them.
