Sorry but this feature is in the game since almost the beggining. Check it fine, you need to use left shift key and the button to move the unit,

Patches that are not present on GOG version add only availables features on STEAM, so both versions work exactly the same depending on the features they have in each platform.

There is a feature that kill zombies inside the structures like mountains or forets to avoid the game get stuck but I haven't seen anytime any of those stuck zombies dieing suddently. This feature kill them slowly.
